TDS DSL Residential and Business Costs

The special rates mentioned on the Beaver Island Forum of $39.99 for 1.5 Mbs and $49.99 for 3.0 Mbs are for residential use only. You can probably get these rates for faster downloads for your one home computer, but configuring a home network for more than one computer will put you "on your own" with no help from TDS. You will have tech support, but the not priority tech support. Can you set up your own home network with a residential DSL connection? Yes, you can if you are computer savvy, know how to buy and set up a router, wireless if needed, and can configure the router to function on DHCP for both inbound and outbound traffic. The residential program sounds more like a setup for one desktop computer, and these prices are both for signing a two-year contract. No matter which plan you get, the download speed is the only thing that you can change. The faster you want to download, the more money you will pay for the faster download. The upload speeds are all 512. These speeds ARE blazingly fast for downloads, but the upload speed is not especially fast.

The next question that needs to be answered publicly includes the availability for this service. Where and when will it be available to the residents of the Island? The general answer from TDS is that it will be available within the next two weeks, but, so far, information is not published. Perhaps there will be something along with this month's telephone bill or another kind of mailer in the near future.

It is exciting to see some competition for Beaver Island Internet business, but will the quantity of business continue to support three providers? Will Great Lakes Energy continue its dial-up service? Will Central Solutions be able to compete with the price structure of TDS? It will be interesting to watch.

There will be additional costs if you are interested in expanding your home network for business use. In a conversation with Brandon McDonald, TDS, today, February 13, 2008, the business costs and what you get for those costs are given below.

Two year contract rates:........................................One year contract rates.

768 down/ 512 up.... $49.99.....................................$59.99

1.5 down/512 up......$69.99.....................................$79.99

3.0 down/512 up......$99.99.....................................$109.99

You also have to pay a one-time shipping and handling fee of $12.95

You get a 4 port router including wireless capability, 20 email addresses, a basic web hosting package that would provide a couple of web pages, 5 licenses for an anti-virus software provided by TDS, and priority tech support. These items are included along with an introductory free installation for the business accounts.

There are bigger and more costly web hosting capabilities, and an additional $10 per month for a static IP address with additional charges for five IP's and then blocks of 8 IP's.
