This special meeting was called on August 22, 2014, at 8:30 a.m. at the BIRHC Education Room for the purpose of going into a closed session and having a conference call with the township attorney. The topic of discussion was the sewer serving the downtown area. There were four township taxpayers in the audience including the editor of BINN, Bob Tidmore, Jack Gallagher, and Keith Albin. There were three other individuals sitting with the board including Karen Wojan, Marie Shimenetto, and Gary Vogt. Shortly after the meeting was called to order, the township board went into closed session. When the door opened, the board came out of closed session and passed two motions related to their closed session. Questions were asked, but no explanation was provided to those asking the questions, and no clear answers were given.
The Beaver Island District Library Board had its regular monthly meeting on Thursday, August 21, 2014. There were two very special visitors, one the librarian for the State of Michigan library and one for the northwestern portion of northern Michigan. They were sitting in on the meeting for at least a portion of the meeting. This meeting was not very contentious, and some interesting discussions took place. The board thanked Donna Stambaugh for her many years of service on the library board as this was her last official meeting as a board member. There was cake, kool-aid, and ice tea for this portion of the meeting.
Friday afternoon was a good time to take a ride and just look around for a while. If you had taken this short ride, you would have seen deer, an osprey, a blue heron, and an eagle. The deer picture did not turn out. Since it's been months since this household has been south of Paid Een Og Road unless there was an emergency, today was the day for a trip down to Fox Lake just to make sure it was still there. On the way back and around Gull Harbor, these pictures were taken.

Blue heron not wanting humans to look at him.
An adult eagle in the dead tree.
Both the heron and the eagle were seen at Gull Harbor.
FUNKY FUN FASHION SHOW was held on Thursday, August 21, 2014, beginning with a luncheon at 12:30 PM. The salads and the deserts were yummy, at least they looked very yummy. The editor was called away for any emergency just before the fashion show began. Some of these pictures were taken by the editor, and some were taken by Phyllis Moore since the editor was working on an emergency during the fashion show.
Before the luncheon was to begin, a lot of socializing took place, then Donna Stambaugh asked for the oldest present and the models eat lunch first.

Waiting and then getting in line for lunch
A few pictures of the deserts that were available
The lines of attendees getting their salads.
Dee Gallagher, organizer of the event, invites the editor to eat lunch.
Immediately after this invitation to lunch and as Donna Stambaugh was asking the editor to take cuts in line and get something to eat, the pager went off calling the editor to an emergency. This left no one manning the video camera, but the camera was left on and recording while the editor was gone. Phyllis Moore was asked by the editor to take some pictures of the fashion show event.
Hardware Jeff performed for the luncheon crowd.
And, the fashion show began....
Elaine West was the MC for the fashion show.
and the show continued....
These are not meant to show all the models and all the clothing modeled, just to give you an idea of the early afternoon fashion show.
Donna Stambaugh thanked everyone and read off the winners of the door prizes.
Remember that the camera was recording without a camera operator.
Besides the adult eagles that have been posing in the dead tree at Gull Harbor, there are also some younger eagles who have stopped to check out the view. These two eagles are obviously different ages, but not quite yet adults. It is just a guess, but perhaps the spotted eagle is a fairly young eagle, and the other one an adolescent and almost an adult. This was a fascinating viewing considering people were walking the trail and did not disturb these Gull Harbor visitors.
From one end of Gull Harbor....
.....to the other...
As close as possible without disturbing these young eagles...
Did you notice that cobwebs are really difficult to photograph? There were plenty of them in the overcast day to photograph. The trouble is that there were none in the pictures that were taken. Except, there was just one that showed up due to the dew or moisture clinging to it.

The regular meeting of the Beaver Island Waste Management Committee took place on August 19, 2014, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Peaine Township Hall. The meeting agenda included a manager's report, a financial document review, a discussion of scrap metal collection at the Transfer Station, a reminder that there would be a review of the policy manual at the September meeting on September 16, 2014.
The Beaver Island Emergency Medical Service sponsored a State of Michigan approved Basic EMT Class. This class began on May 1, 2014. The class met four nights each week for four hours each night for the months of May, June, July, and August. The class ended tonight, August 19, 2014, with five very dedicated students who put in over two hundred hours of class time to be able to help the community as well as themselves.
Those five students were Jewell Gillespie-Cushman, Ron Marsh, Charlie Carey, Olivia Cary, and Jenna Wilk. All five will be recommended to the National Registry of EMTs to take a national certification exam. All five will be recommended for licensing by the State of Michigan after success on the NREMT exam.
The course was taught by paramedic Joe Moore with evaluation assistance from Deb Plastrik, Kevin White, and Rachel Champenoy. BINN wishes each of you success and thanks you for your dedication to the community in which you live!
The last day of donation yoga is WEDNESDAY August 27th. We raised a lot of money for the center! Thank you, Lisa
Rainy...and bright.
The August garden, a crazy circus of orange and yellow and (yes!) apricot Day Lilies, Black-eyed Susan, pink Cosmos, bright Marigolds and WEEDS, is also alive with trails of pumpkin runners, tomato plants and heavily loaded grape vines hanging over the fence. The asparagus fronds wave a golden mist in front of the drying raspberry canes. The pea plants are yellow: the last, late harvest of peas went into the soup pot yesterday. The potato plants are wilting, a sign that their work is done, and potatoes can be dug soon. The cucumbers struggle on. This rain will help.
August is a mix of living and dying.
Walking down the Fox Lake Road last evening, I noticed more of the same. The wild raspberries, just like the cultivated plants in my garden, are just about done. The milkweed is dying, putting the last of its energy into producing seed pods...but their drying flowers still perfume the air as I pass. Blackberry bushes, I am happy to announce, are loaded with green fruit. It will be ripening soon, and keep us in sweet harvest until the frost.
August is a mix of dying and living.
My sisters were here, with families and friends, to celebrate life in our own crazy ways. August is a mix in our family, too, with birthdays and anniversaries interspersed with dates associated with the death of a loved one. Strength is born of sadness, but more: through loss I have learned to cherish the moment, the life we are given, and the people I’m blessed with. I feel in every hug, every baby’s laugh and every “I love you,” a tremendous gratitude for the insight to appreciate this wild life.
A good friend lost her sister last week; another lost her brother just the day before yesterday. My friend, John, is here on Beaver Island to honor his lifelong partner, Larry, who died last year.
It’s raining today, but the sun shines through.
Life is a mix.
We must forge on.

Beaver Island's Visitor VesselThe phone rang. It was a family friend. "There's a cruise ship at the BIBCO dock. I thought you would want to know," she said. Thanking her, the camera and video camera were loaded up and off to the BIBCO they went. As the Beaver Islander unloaded for one trip from Charlevoix and loaded for another trip back, the Grande Mariner rested at the BIBCO dock until the Emerald Isle was due in her berth.
Another VisitorWith a hollar from the wife with a "come here and bring the camera," there was a rush out the back door with the thoughts of serious injury or danger in my mind. "Look down there-by the garden fence," she said. As a typical husbamd. I asked, "What? Where? What's going on? Are you okay?" She said, "Look down by the garden fence, there's a frog or a toad trying to get into the garden fence." Sure enough there was a toad down there, and sure enough the toad was trying to climb the chicken wire fence to get into the garden. What an amazingly tenacious animal trying to climb the fence. This was not only a tenacious toad, but a tired toad as well. We'll never know how long he had been trying to get into the garden area. (S)he had to get past one fence and one gate already to get into the enclosed back yard. I am certain that the toad, male or female, was smiling as I gently lifted the toad from outside the garden fence to inside the garden fence, and the toad immediately scrambled in under the shade of the tomato and potato plants in that fenced in area.
Homecoming Softball PicturesThe Homecoming Softball games and other activities keep everyone quite busy throughout this Homecoming Weekend. Besides the softball games, there is the August Dinner on Sunday, and music in all the pubs and bars. It can be quite impossible to attend everything nowdays. If you choose to play music or go out and hear the music, you may have difficulty getting to other activities. BINN encounter this issue of time also. Finally the pictures are being posted from this past weekend's softball games. Here they are! Homecoming Softball in a picture essay. An interesting weekend to say the least, this was! Announcements/AdsDue to the cold weather we had this spring, we are running about a month behind. We were originally supposed to get the first batch of chicks May 1st, but the fact that it was still so cold here made us have to postpone their arrival until the third week in May. In short, they will not be ready until about the second week in July. We apologize for the delay, but they will be worth the wait!!!

In celebrating one hundred years of coming to Beaver Island by the families of Broder, Hoffman, and Collar, a fireworks display was put on for the community over St. James Harbor on the evening of August 12, 2014. Cars were once again lined up along the public beach, and people were outside in the chilly evening to enjoy this celebration by these families. BINN got two views of the fireworks from two different locations, and these views have been combined into one video clip presented below. Thanks to Phyllis Moore and Deb Bousquet for these videos.

The BICS Board met on Monday, August 11, 2014, with a large number of people in the audience. While the agenda was not indicative of any controversy, the looks on the faces of the board members and the attendees indicated that something was going on. The fact of the matter is that one of the board members attended the meeting via video broadcast, five board members were present, and one board member was absent. You can watch the video of this board meeting HERE.

St. James Township Supervisor Bill Haggard notified us today that the 2% grant AMVETS Post 46 applied for thru the township was approved. This grant will allow us to complete the landscaping of the berm next to the lake at the Veterans Memorial Park and most importantly purchase bricks to recognize those Native Americans from the Archipelago who served in the Armed Forces of the USA. Thanks to George Anthony and Mary Kenwabikise who provided the initial list for the grant application. We will be working with them and others to make sure all are properly recognized.
We want to thank the Tribal Council of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa & Chippewa Indians for this grant.
Lance Olson, one of the organizers of the Blacksmithing visits and demonstrations for the Island Museum Week, has written a book. The book is about to be published and may be available in McDonough's Market and/or the Beaver Island Historical Society Print Shop Museum within a week or two. Here is a look at the front cover and the rear cover of this book.
Beaver Island AMVETS Post 46 is offering a $1000 scholarship to any student who graduated from the Beaver Island Community School and has completed at least one year of post-high school education and has not previously received an AMVETS scholarship.
We are accepting applications in electronic format at the following e-mail address.
The deadline is August 31st and the scholarship will be awarded not later than the 15th of SeptemberToday, August 2, 2014, the Beaver Island Airport Commission had its first meeting in several months. Another first is that this meeting took place at the meeting room of the new Beaver Island Airport Terminal Building. There was discussion of a "punch list" on items that needed to be completed on the terminal. A report was given on the five year plan. The lease agreement with Fresh Air Aviation was discussed and approved. The commission went into closed session to discuss the East approach. After the closed seesion, and without any report on the closed session or any decisions made, the meeting continued with the airport manager's report. Elaine West was confirmed as the chairperson with Don Vyse as the vice-chair. Don Vyse also had a list of issues that needed to be discussed.
Interestingly enough, the public wifi has not yet been activated at the terminal, and the emergency radio and antenna have not yet been move and located in the new terminal. This was promised to be accomplished prior to the November 1, 2014 regular meeting.
Video of the complete open session is presented at this link HERE. (Finally processed and uploaded)

Several family and business subscriptions expired in July. This is a reminder to those that wish to renew online. If you do renew online using a credit or debit card, and the Paypal SUBSCRIBE button, BINN will automatically make a donation of $10 in your name to the Beaver Island Food Pantry. If you are not sure when your subscription expires, please email the editor at medic5740@gmail.com, and your subscription expiration will be included in a return email.
"A rupture in either of Enbridge’s two oil pipelines running under the Straits of Mackinac could result in an unprecedented environmental catastrophe to the waters and shorelines of northern Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. Within twelve hours a spill could reach Mackinac and Round islands. In two days it could reach Bois Blanc Island with damage stretching to Rogers City within 10 days. Within sixteen days, a spill could reach Beaver Island in northern Lake Michigan."
When, in the past, Beaver Island had a rescue boat, it was included in a plan to be put to work containing a spill or a leak of this pipeline. The two townships raffled off the rescue boat captained originally by Alan Muma, the Charlevoix County Sheriff's Department Deputy on Beaver Island. The BI Fire Department took over control of the rescue boat after Alan Muma left, and, after some unfortunate mechanical problems, the boat was raffled off using the BIEMS raffle license.
There have been some reports of neglect related to the maintenance agreements by those running the oil through this pipeline.
September will bring watercolor artist Sharon Long to Beaver Island once again. With a generous mini-grant from Beaver Island Cultural Arts Association helping the community, the class fees have been reduced this year. Half-day sessions will cost $45 and full day sessions will be $90. The fees include 3 hour or six hour lessons including all supplies. There is a limit in class size due to her teaching style Those of you who have taken classes with Sharon previously are urged to sign up by emailing me as soon as possible. New students need to be aware that the beginning of the week, Monday-Wednesday (Sept 8-10), will be more intensive class instruction (perfect for beginners), especially morning time sessions. The afternoons and latter week days (Thursday and Friday), are generally more relaxed creative time for individualized help, as well as intermediate and advanced artists participation. As a bonus (weather permitting) Sharon will be giving a photo walk on Sunday Sept 7th to teach you about using the lens as an artist's eye. This is free of charge to all class enrollees. Please go to sharin2art.com/blog for a look at her work. If you know you can participate in the classes or have any questions, please email me at leonor.jacobson@gmail.com.
