Vehicle Fire by Township Airport

A little before two p.m. on Sunday, January 3, 2016, the Beaver Island Fire Departent was paged to the township airport for a vehicle fire. Upon arrival, the vehicle was fully involved in the flames including the tires. Two fire department pumpers and a tanker responded to the scene along with the Charlevoix County Sheriff's Department deputy and BIEMS. The vehicle was just getting ready to turn onto Donnel Mors Lane from the Airport Road when the heater fan wouldn't shut off. The occupants saw flame and quickly unloaded the vehicle and moved away from it. The vehicle is a total loss. There were no reported injuries to the occupants of the vehicle nor to the fire department or other responders.

Many thanks to Bob Tidmore for this video clip. If you were to ask if anyone was going surfing today, you'd get an interesting look from the person asked. Yet, here is someone surfing in Charlevoix off the public beach.

Just a note to remember the memories of some of the Beaver Island Pets that we have lost this past year.

Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened. ~ Anatole France

I want to pause and remember the beloved pets who crossed over the “Rainbow Bridge” this year. I apologize I am sure there are more than these and please add them to this post. These wonderful pets gave such wonderful unconditional love to their owners and families a rare gift indeed.

My New Year's Resolutions

An Editorial by Joe Moore

As I sit in my chair watching the television and hear about all these resolutions that people have made, such as “I’m going to lose weight,” “I’m going to get organized,” and “I’m going to improve my life,” etc., I think about some of the things that have transpired in the last year or so, and wonder what I could do to improve the situations that may not have been very positive.

So, my New Year’s resolutions are these:

If I have done something in the last year or so that has made you uncomfortable, I apologize.  If I have questioned your motives over something in the last year or so, I’m sorry that we had a disagreement about this.  If I have actually upset your apple cart in the last year or so, I’m sorry that you had to experience that.  Whatever I may have done to make you upset, I sincerely apologize.

There are three personal things that I have resolved:

The first is that when my medical certifications, licenses, and instructor certifications come up for renewal, I will NOT be renewing them, so, if you want a course taught by me, you better speak up soon.

The second is not anything new, but is necessary to restate for the 2016 year.  When I encounter a situation where my patient’s best patient care is not occurring, I will speak out for the best patient care possible given the circumstances provided.  I further resolve that each patient that I encounter in an emergency will get the best patient care possible, and will be transported to definitive care by the quickest possible, acceptable, and legal method.

The third resolution is to continue to follow the EMT Oath that I took in 1986:

“Be it pledged as an Emergency Medical Technician, I will honor the physical and judicial laws of God and man. I will follow that regimen which, according to my ability and judgment, I consider for the benefit of patients and abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous, nor shall I suggest any such counsel. Into whatever homes I enter, I will go into them for the benefit of only the sick and injured, never revealing what I see or hear in the lives of men unless required by law.

I shall also share my medical knowledge with those who may benefit from what I have learned. I will serve unselfishly and continuously in order to help make a better world for all mankind.

While I continue to keep this oath unviolated, may it be granted to me to enjoy life, and the practice of the art, respected by all men, in all times. Should I trespass or violate this oath, may the reverse be my lot.

So help me God.”

As editor of Beaver Island News on the ‘Net, I resolve to provide information to my community in a timely manner without bias and without comments unless they are labeled as editorial.  I pledge to continue to provide pictures, video, and text in a timely manner until such time as this becomes financially or physically impossible.

If you are supportive of my resolutions, may your year be wonderful.  If you are antagonistic of these resolutions, I will apologize in advance for my reactions.

Volunteer EMS?

Historical Information and Editorial by Joe Moore

Beaver Island EMS was founded in 1986 with an EMT class taught by John LaMont, current director of Boyne City EMS, because Mike McGinnity, provider at the medical center, knew he would need some help during serious emergencies.  Another class was completed in 1987 and the beginnings of EMS were completely volunteer.  All but two from the original class left the island. The next year another class was taught.  Fortunately, another more advanced class was taught in 1989 because the treatments needed by the emergency patients on the island required more advanced skills.

Phyllis' Daily Weather

for December 31, 2015

Thought we'd take this year out in style - by really sleeping in. Holy moley, I can't remember the last time I slept in this late. I'd still be in bed if the phone hadn't been ringing. Wishing each and everyone one of you a safe and happy New Year. Right now it's 30° with a wind chill of 20°, wind is at 11 mph from the WNW with gusts to 16 mph, humidity is at 81%, pressure is steady at 1020 mb, and visibility is at 9.6 miles. Today: Periods of light snow. Highs in the lower 30s. West winds 5 to 15 mph. Gusts up to 20 mph increasing to 30 mph in the afternoon. Tonight: Periods of light snow in the evening, then periods of snow showers after midnight. Lows in the mid 20s. West winds 10 to 15 mph with gusts to around 30 mph.

On this date of December 31, 1929 - Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians played "Auld Lang Syne" as a New Year's Eve song for the first time.

Did you know that this morning I suffered from dysania? That is the state of finding it hard to get out of bed in the morning.

Word of the day: clinquant (KLING-kuh nt) which means glittering, especially with tinsel; decked with garish finery. Clinquant entered English in the late 1500s and ultimately derives from the Dutch klinken meaning "to sound."

Last but not least.... Go Michigan State Spartans!!

Frozen Sleet

Having made a trip to the airport, the grass and the trees has this sheen of ice that showed some beauty along with the danger of the slippery roadways. This required another trip out on the icy roads to get some of these pictures that are presented here.

It was desired to get some close-up pictures of the ice as well as the longer distance photos as well.

Some interesting buds and berries

Even some pine needles looked interesting with ice and crystals

And then some frozen grass and twigs

Just too fascinated to quit....

And some milk weed ice coverings

No matter the cold, the snow, the frozen drizzle; the beauty is still there!

Lawrence McDonough, 101, Passed Away

Sometime during the night, or early morning of 12/29/2015, Lawrence McDonough passed away.

Lawrence Matthew McDonough passed away at the age of 101 at his home surrounded by his family. Lawrence was born and raised on Beaver Island, Michigan on November 15, 1914 to Sylvester “Vesty" McDonough and Mary Connaghan, one of eight children. He married Winifred LaFreniere in 1939 who proceeded him in death in 2009. They raised 6 children, sons Gary (Jean), Lawrence (Kay), Joseph (Tarry), Kevin (Linda), and two daughters, Pamela (Brad) Grassmick and Kathie (Timothy) Gonyeau. He enjoyed his 17 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lawrence was raised on Sand Bay on the Jordan River and worked his family’s homesteaded farm. He was blessed with good friends and family, a strong sense of community, and had a grand sense of humor. He had frequent visitors seeking his stories of early island life as well as all of the changes and progress that he saw on Beaver Island during his lifetime. Some of his various careers included: owning the first pasteurized dairy; sailing the Great Lakes on freighters; logging; and serving as a board of director for the first BIBCO. He was captain of the first Emerald Isle and the Beaver Islander. He managed the Beaver Island Boat Company until his retirement in 1980.

A spring funeral service at Holy Cross Catholic Church is being planned. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Holy Cross Church or Beaver Island EMS.

Snow or Not

by Cindy Ricksgers

Thank You

This is a shout-out and a huge "Thank You, Very Much," to all those who worked to keep the power on and to help keep the roads clear on Christmas Eve Day with winds gusting to gale force. Thank you, Mike McDonough, Jim Wojan, Steve Crandall, and Doug Gillespie, as well as to any others that helped with individual downed trees and blocked roadways! A few pictures were taken on the north end of the island. There were many pictures also on facebook by those who might have been stranded. Driving by the generators at the Four Corners, the sounds of generators added to the sound of the winds.

While some on the island were out of power and able to run on generators at their homes, others were just out of power.

Take care out there, and be safe!
