What Did You Say?

(This is the beginning of another book written by Joe Moore about public safety on the most remote inhabited island in the Great Lakes. Many are not aware that the author was an auxiliary officer for the Charlevoix County Sheriff's Department for three deputies over a long period of time, a fireman for the Beaver Island Fire Department, as well an an EMT and, eventually, a paramedic. These stories will include some truth and some fiction.)

-Motorcycle Accident

There are those emergencies that stick in your head even after thirty years of volunteering.  These situations may actually be remembered because of the relationship with the patient or for any other reason, not necessarily for the seriousness of the emergency.

One such emergency happened way out of town in the summertime.

Ruby Ann

The Ruby Ann has been sitting on the marine railway on Bud Martin's property for a while. In the last couple of days, some plans must have been made to do some work on the fish tug. The Ruby Ann has been lifted off the marine railway, is sitting in front of the Bud Martin green building, and it is rumored that it is there for some welding. Perhaps the vessel will be put back in service, but the purpose has not been revealed.

Snowy Day

Drive carefully out there today. The snow continues to come down with seven or eight inches on the level with drifting to sixteen inches in some places.

Wendy Anne Bringing in a Load

Phyllis' Daily Weather

I'm thinking that we aren't going to have to dream about a white Christmas as we have a whole lot of snow and more to come. It's ok with me as, for some reason, it always seems a tad warmer with snow than it does with just the icy winds. Anyhow, if you have to be out, please, PLEASE drive carefully. Sociolect occupies the middle ground between dialect, the speech of a particular geographical area, especially as that variety of speech differs from a standard; and idiolect, which studies the speech and speech habits of a particular person. The word was coined and defined by the sociolinguist Mervyn Alleyne in 1963.

Beaver Island Half Marathon Sets the Pace

From the Cultural Arts Association

by Frank D'Andraia

All: Looks like another White Xmas here on the Island, and the attachment (see above) indicates the Association will be getting something other than coal in its stocking for 2016.

As former Board members hear news about NEW BICAA Board of Director appointments:

New Board Members:

The Board of Directors of the Beaver Island Cultural Arts Association (BICAA) recently approved the appointments of a cross-section of Island residents to the BICAA Board. The new members join a group of Island leaders each with an interest in the cultural arts. The newly elected Board of Directors include:

William Schneider, a nationally recognized piano and organ restoration specialist and recently retired head of piano technology at Michigan State University. Schneider is a long standing resident of Peaine Township and Mason, Michigan and a Baroque on Beaver devotee. Bill Schneider is the former owner of Schneider Piano and Pipe Organ Service, Inc. and a regular contributor to Piano World, the “most complete resource for information about pianos on the Internet.”

For the past 11 years Lois Sowa Stipp has been Director of the Beaver Island Museum Week Art Show. In 2011 she opened the Beaver Island Studio and Gallery, which is located on the Donegal Bay Road. In 2016 she was reelected as Chair/President of the Diamond Valley (CA) Arts Council and continues her long standing commitment to serve as a jurist for the San Jacinto/Hemet (CA) Festival of the Arts. An accomplished businesswoman, Ms. Stipp has significant experience working with not for profit art organizations and has been involved in fostering the development of cultural tourism on Beaver Island. Ms Stipp is a resident of Hemet, California and St. James Township.

Lois Williams is a founding member (1988) of the Beaver Island Association; a former Secretary of the Beaver Island Wildlife Club (2001-2010); a Baroque on Beaver supporter and a regular participant in the Island's Museum Week Art Show. She and her husband Joe have been residents of the Island for well over two decades. Her professional training was in Nursing. Joe and Lois maintain homes in Grand Rapids and St. James, MI.

The BICAA also announced the non board appointment of Emily Ruddell as Chair of the committee responsible for coordinating volunteers during the Baroque on Beaver Music Festival. Ms. Ruddell has a strong record of volunteerism. She is a long standing Baroque on Beaver volunteer and is similarly active with the BI Historical Society. Ms Ruddell is a regular participant in the activities of the Community Library and Community Center. A retired educator, Ms Ruddell and her husband John divide their time between Beaver Island, Michigan and Tallahassee Florida.

Letter to CCCOA from BIHSC

After several meetings held on Beaver Island regarding the services provided to seniors, the Human Services Commission has serious concerns about the program that has been modified time and time again since the loss of the certified nurses aide Pam Nicholas. The services that were suggested seem to be unavailable or are very difficult to obtain as suggested in this letter.

Amendment to Emergency Services Authority Document

The following amednment was passed last Wednesday, December 7, 2016, by St. James Township, and also passed last night, December 14, 2016, by the Peaine Township Board with publication to take place along with filing with the Secretary of State for Michigan. This is perhaps a late completion of this required amendment to make the current five member board and functions legal and registered with the state. It is a good thing to finally get this BIESA Board appointments and previous decisions made on a basis that is consistent with the law.

Word of the day: peccadillo (pek-uh-DIL-oh) which means a very minor or slight sin or offense; a trifling fault. Peccadillo has a mixed etymology. In Spanish the word is spelled pecadillo (with one c); the Italian word is spelled peccadiglio (with two c ’s). Both words are diminutive nouns ultimately deriving from Latin peccatum, which in Classical Latin means “fault, mistake, transgression,” and also “sin.” In Christian Latin, e.g., the Vulgate, peccatum means “guilt, punishment for sin, sin.” The word entered English in the late 1500s.

Steam Car

by Dick Burris

Steam car:

by Dick Burris

I decided one day to make a steam motor out of a six cylinder Chevrolet engine. Six cylinders have a "three plane" crankshaft, leaving one cylinder always open for a steam entry. For better control I used the exhaust ports for the steam entry.

The camshaft needed modification for a two cycle steam motor. So it was removed, and I stainless steel welded lobes on the opposite side of all of the cam lifters. This was fine but number 2 connecting rod struck the newly "built up" cam, by a fraction; so I ground a spot on the rod cap to make clearance. That allowed free rotation.

The steam boiler that I constructed did not have the volume to run all six cylinders, so I just fed only the three back cylinders with steam flow.

For height discrepancies in the double lifters, Bud Esch, adjusted the hydraulic lifters, He then joined in the fun of making the engine run on steam.

We used battery power to run a fan, feeding fire to the heat coils of the boiler, that intensified the steam output. If the motor worked it would run the alternator to keep the battery up.

I had installed a "compressed scuba air blow off valve" set to 500psi. When it hit 500, it ran a little past before shooting out steam; Bud didn't wait, he cleared the area in about a second.

I opened the valve to the engine, and the pipe from the intake manifold, (that stuck up through the car hood) started puffing steam rings.

At that point, it occurred to me that I should take it into town. It had the power, but not enough "RPMs"to move the automatic transmission. So that was out!

After running it for around 1/2 hour I shut it down; finding a potential problem with water in the crankcase, cuz the oil was a little "milky" At that point I was satisfied that it would work, and scrapped the whole idea (and the  car).

Perhaps, I have ruffled a few feathers in this community over the years, but sometimes, to get the truth out, ruffling of feathers is necessary in good journalism. Cover-ups or simply ignoring issues does not seem valuable to me. If that is the reason for the situation that BINN is in, I personally apologize.

We are so sorry to have to make the following announcement, but it is essential at this time.  With the lack of support from many island businesses in advertising, and a severe decrease in the number of subscribers who have renewed their subscriptions, something needs to change in the operation of Beaver Island News on the ‘Net.

We certainly want to thank those businesses that have continued to support us with their advertisements and subscriptions. Thank you to Island Airways, Beaver Island Boat Company, the Beaver Island Association, the Beaver Island District Library, Charlevoix State Bank, the Beaver Island Community Center, Ed Wojan Realty, Power's Do It Best Hardware, Beaver Island Management Services, Beaver Island Massage, Emerald Isle Hotel, Jean's Lawn Services, Weathervane Inn and Terrace, and our newest supporter, Associated Outdoor Services. Thank you so much for your support! We also appreciate the trade in services with an arrangement with the Beaver Island Chamber of Commerce and the Beaver Island Cultural Arts Association!

We also wish to thank all of our subscribers that have renewed and continue to support our efforts of providing:

"Today's News As Close to Today as Possible."

As we have employed people to do video recording and live streaming of events in the past, that will have to be the first budget cut.  It won't be cut entirely, but it will be decreased. As everyone in business knows, the income must at least match or exceed the expenses because you can't write checks from an account with a negative balance.

Let's just quickly review the costs of doing some events. Let's say a certain event lasts two hours. With set up and tear down for live-streaming, the total time will be at leasst three and a half to four hours for wages to be paid. The cost of doing the live-streaming and the recording storage for a two hour event, depending on the number of views and maintenance of equipment, is approximately $100.00 per two-hour event. If the event is more than one day, obviously, the approximate cost doubles even if the equipment is able to be left set-up. A Friday night and Saturday morning event will cost approximately $200.00.

Even an event that lasts two hours that is "just recorded" will cost just shy of the $100.00 for a two hour event. And, this cost is low when you include the processing time, the uploading time, the computer equipment necessary, and the posting time to a website. So, the simple fact of the matter is that certain events will not end up on recorded video, and other events may not be live-streamed. This may change if support for these services increases, but currently this is the financial situation.

Donations are gladly accepted for live streaming video for events, and you can donate to several charitable organizations as well at this link HERE

Beaver Island Gets First Accumulation Above an Inch

With just a little dusting of snow on the ground here on the island for most of the fall and early winter, Sunday, December 11, 2016, marks the accumulation due to a winter storm that was predicted. With the USCG Cutter Mackinaw making a trip to the island for buoy replacement, it was necessary to make a trip to Whiskey Point. Some pictures were taken along the way back and may be viewed in the gallery below.

Cutter Mackinaw Visits

While the Beaver Island church services were taking place this morning, the USCG Marckinaw came into Paradise Bay as far as Whiskey Point to remove the bell buoy and replace it with an ice buoy. Thanks to Bob Tidmore for the picture of the Mackinaw on station.

While this process takes place each year, it is not usual for this to take place in the middle of a snow squall and snow storm. The path of the Mackinaw is shown below.

By the time BINN Editor Joe Moore arrived on site, the Mackinaw was getting ready to leave and continue on its mission to replacing the buoys in the area.

Planned Mass from Holy Cross, Sunday, 9:30 a.m.

This is the second time this week that the weather has put a damper in the plans for services at Holy Cross Church. Nevertheless, with Deacon Jim Siler here, we still were able to have a communion service and praise God for his blessings. "After all, we could be stuck on the other side," an unidentified person stated. The priest from Charlevoix has not been able to come to the island due to weather delays and just plain and simple snow storms cutting visibility on the mainland.

Word of the day: festschrift (FEST-shrift) which means a volume of articles, essays, etc., contributed by many authors in honor of a colleague, usually published on the occasion of retirement, an important anniversary, or the like. Festschrift is a common word in American and British academic institutions. A British or American festschrift will typically read “Essays for N.N.” or “A Festschrift in Honor of N.N.” The meaning of the German noun Fest is obvious enough; schrift derives from the verb schreiben meaning “to write,” an early borrowing from Latin scrībere meaning “to write,” from which English derives the verb shrive and the noun shrift. The word entered English in the late 1800s.

Cookie Carnival and Holiday Shopping

December 10, 2016

Deb Bousquet was back on the island, and she offered to take some video and some pictures of the Cookie Carnival and the Holiday Shopping this afternoon. Deb did not go to the Community Center, but she did get to the Cookie Carnival, the Island Treasurers Resale Shop, the Blue Pearl, Shipwreck Shirts, Mark Englesman's shop, Cottage Massage, St. James Boat Shop, and Power's Hardware. She took several video clips and almost one hundred pictures, some of which are in the gallery below.

More Growth—EMS Grows in the 21st Century

by Joe Moore

(modified story previously posted)

As I sit here writing this, I just came in from using an electric snow blower to clear my driveway.  Beaver Island had received some six inches of snow with blowing and drifting all night long.

At 2:20 a.m. this morning, our local EMS was paged to the medical center for an 87 year old female patient with chest tightness and pressure.  I think that we could have our work cut out for ourselves this morning as I get dressed, and almost immediately call Central Dispatch that “57 Echo 4 is on scene.”  I live directly across Carlisle Road from the medical center.

Upon arrival I found two of the “emergency rooms,” the rooms set aside for emergency treatment, both with a patient.  I’m sure that our current FNP saw the expression on my face.

Word of the day: footle (FOO T-l) which means 1) to act or talk in a foolish or silly way. 2) nonsense; foolishness; silliness. The origin of footle is obscure. It may be related to the British dialect footy meaning “poor, worthless.” It may be a variant of Scottish and Irish footer meaning “to screw around, futz around,” from the French verb foutre meaning “to screw up, fuck.” The word entered English in the 1890s.

After, Earl ended up relocating to Traverse City for two years and then moved to Georgia to be near family for the following six years. In June 2016, he made his final move back to Michigan. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and sports, especially cheering on any Spartan during a MSU sporting event.

Planned Mass from Holy Cross, Thursday, 9:30 a.m.

Due to the weather in Charlevoix, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception Mass was not possible, but Deacon Jim Siler stepped in to provide a service that included communion and a short, but very effective sermon. Several of those present learned something new at this service including this editor. Thanks to Deacon Jim for his extra trip over to the Rectory to plug in the wires, so that the live stream could take place. Although, at this moment, it is possible that no one participated at home, this wonderful service was recorded also for anyone who is interested in viewing it.

Word of the day: campanology (kam-puh-NOL-uh-jee) which means the principles or art of making bells, bell ringing, etc. The Late Latin noun campāna (plural campānae) meant “bell,” so called because bells were made in Campania (which means “wide, level plain”), whose chief city has always been Naples. About 400 A.D. St. Paulinus of Nola (c354–c431), bishop of Nola, commissioned a large bell to be cast to summon Christians to worship. The Italian word for bell is campana, which has the derivatives campanile, the distinctive bell tower of an Italian church (as opposed to a steeple) and campanilismo, local rivalry, usually petty, sometimes fierce. The word entered English in the 1820s in the sense “the art of bell ringing.”

Mass from Holy Cross, 9:30 a.m. Sunday

December 4, 2016

Approximately seventy people attend Mass at Holy Cross Catholic Church this morning for the 9:30 a.m. Sunday Mass. The choir sangs songs with an Advent theme, preparation for Christmas. The minor key of "O Come O Come Emmanuel" always makes this a somewhat sad feeling prior to the joyous time of Christmas. Tammy McDonough led the choice with her singing and her guitar. There will be a Christmas Eve Service as well as a Christmas Day Service at Holy Cross.

We were informed that this Thursday is Mass of Immacualte Conception, so News on the 'Net will probably be live streaming that service as well.

Traditions

An Editorial by Joe Moore

Traditions
Now, we go on to yet another topic that I find unacceptable in the small community of Beaver Island.  One of things that makes this community different than the big city is that most people here know most other people here.  It seems that the tradition on the island is to greet others when passing them in cars or trucks or loaders or dump trucks or bulldozers by waving at them.  Most people wave at most other people even if you don’t truly know who is in the other vehicle.  It’s just a common courtesy to follow this tradition.

Now, the thing that I find is that greeting others in public is also a common courtesy.  When you enter a place of business, the employee greets you and you greet them.  When you pass someone in the grocery aisle or at the hardware store or at the post office, it is common courtesy to greet the other person.  The simple fact is that people greet each other.  They don’t necessarily stand around and have a long in depth conversation, but they greet each other.

So, what do I find that is unacceptable about this?  Some people in a small community don’t like others in this same small community.  Perhaps, the un-liked person has made you angry or said something that you don’t agree with or can’t go along with.  Perhaps they have actually upset you to the extent that you may have used an expletive or two or more regarding that person or that person’s behavior.  But, the common courtesy in this small community is to greet another person when you see them whether you are friends or enemies.  This tradition was taught to me by the Greggs, the Wojans, the McDonoughs, and the Greens, by the generation that has mostly moved on to be with our Lord.  After forty-three years of being taught this tradition, it upsets me when people who should know better don’t follow this tradition.

To walk by a person that has spent years greeting you, shaking your hand, and doing activities together without a greeting is unacceptable even if you are mad at them.  Your public responsibility is to follow the traditions that have been established in the community that you are a part of.  So, I want you to know that when you walk past me, even if you are mad at me for some reason, and don’t greet me, I have made a very uncharacteristic judgment about you.  I have decided that you really are breaking the traditions of the community in which you live.  You are purposefully ignoring that tradition.  Even serious enemies greet each other in the public areas.  They even shake hands.  So, pass me by without a greeting, and I’ll be making some nasty comments about you in my mind, especially if I know you don’t like me or are angry with me.
I responded and helped your friends, your neighbors, and probably your relatives and I wasn’t rude, so why are you being rude to me?  I also want you to know that others are also making judgments about you when you pass anyone without a greeting.  Hope those of you who do this on purpose know that it really reflects more on you and not on the person that you failed to greet.

Now, I can fully understand when you are distracted, on your way to an appointment, or on your way to a construction site.  Perhaps you just forget to wave.  Perhaps you are in a hurry.  Perhaps you are having a bad day.  Perhaps you have been off the island for a while.  You will get the benefit of the doubt, but others may not be so forgiving when they observe your failure to follow the traditions.  They may judge you as being rude and make other assumptions about you.  Just so you know this is happening.

I am going to let you know right now that I will not purposefully drive by you without waving or nodding my head.  I will not walk by you on purpose without greeting you and asking you how you are doing.  I’m not going to pass you by if you drop something.  Instead, I’m going to stop and pick it up for you.  That’s the way I was taught by Bud and Skip, Joy and Russell, and Phil and Lil with help from lots of others in the last forty plus years.

Other traditions seem to have gone away on the island as well, and I am sad that they have disappeared.  The annual New Year’s Eve Party at the Holy Cross Hall was one of those that brought the entire island together.  Perhaps, this is why I’m sad.  These are the things that brought us together as a community, and seem to be disappearing in our busy society today.  Christmas caroling used to be one of the most perfect opportunities for people to get together and sing with special efforts at stopping at the older people’s homes to bring them some Christmas cheer.  Attending the Christian Church Christmas Eve service used to be the tradition no matter which church you attended and then going to the Christmas Eve Mass afterward was also part of that tradition.  Another tradition that seems to have passed by the wayside is the Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service where all churches on the island participated, and then stopping by at the Community Thanksgiving Dinner with a dish to pass or a dessert for the dinner even if you had family visiting.  Just having a quick cup of coffee was part of the tradition if you had already eaten or were eating later.  Even attendance at the gift performance of the Christmas Cantata has dropped off, and is now down to a Christmas Concert with only one performance.
The whole point of these gatherings was to have the community get together as a community.  To give holiday greetings to those that you might not otherwise see on the holidays was yet another tradition.  Just getting together was part of the island’s tradition.  In earlier years, these gatherings were not just close family.  They included “outsiders” on purpose, not just by chance.  Some were organized specifically because some island residents didn’t have family.

These are the things that I miss.  I wish we could get these traditions back again, or replace them with some new traditions.  I, for one, will participate in any of these traditions that still remain, or attend if I can’t participate because they are what make this community a community that cares about its people.  If you are not participating because you are mad at someone, step up with some courage and determination and help bring these traditions back to life.  The whole community will benefit.

Sometimes, certain things have a habit of really setting me off.  For example, I don’t have a lot of use for instructions that are not exact and step-by-step.  The attitude of just trust that this is going to work doesn’t set well with me.  I am a concrete sequential type person that needs a list of steps necessary to get to the end product.  If you give me the hoops to jump through, it may take me years, but if it’s something I want to see accomplished, I’ll make sure that each and every hoop will be jumped through in the proper order.
Now, random abstract people find me very frustrated when these steps are all mixed up, and when instructions are not followed.  That’s just the nature of the concrete-sequential beast.  We need logical steps with clear instructions, and that’s our absolute need. We can accomplish just about anything with a good set of instructions.
I don’t have even one drop of mechanically inclined blood in my body, but given a complete set of logical steps and pictures, I was able to rebuild a carburetor on the kitchen table and get it back in the old Ford station wagon, and, yes, hook it back up to the accelerator, and it worked.  It was accomplished due to a good set of logical instructions that were made by another concrete-sequential mind.
Today, I set up a smartphone, an Apple 6s cellphone, and it was a very frustrating experience.  The instructions were not complete.  Well, when they were followed, the task was completed, but throughout, I was frustrated because there were things going on in cyberspace that I didn’t even know about let alone understand.
Here’s the complete set of instructions that were provided with the new phone:

  1. Turn off the old cellphone.
  2. Call this number.
  3. Make sure the old cellphone is off.
  4. Set up an iCloud account, make sure you register.
  5. Turn on the new cellphone and follow the instructions on the screen.

Talk about driving me nuts.  They were successful after several attempts and several trips to the computer to look up information.  Now here’s how a concrete, sequential person would have written the instructions.

  1.  You don’t have to do anything to make certain that your contacts, applications, and data end up on your new phone.  The phone has done an automatic backup yesterday.  When you turned it on today, that backup was verified.  You might miss some of these and there will be no reason given why some were recovered and others were missing.  Just accept that as part of the process.
  2. You need to call the following number to let us know that you have a new phone.  In order to do this, you will need your old phone number, your apple user-id, and your apple password.  You will also have to sign up for iCloud.  This is best done on your old phone, so you know for sure that the information about you and your phone are current.  You will be prompted for all of this information during this call, so have it ready, so you don’t have to go looking for it.
  3. Since you are now going to be setting up your new phone, make sure that your old phone is turned off, BEFORE you turn on your new phone.
  4. Turn on your new phone, after turning off the old one.  Make sure that you have your user-id’s, passwords, cellphone number, any application usernames and passwords, and any and all application account information for any that you want transferred to the new phone.
  5. Make sure that you complete the process in one attempt, or you will have to start over from the beginning each time.  By the way, if you leave the phone for too long, you will be disconnected, and you’ll have to start over from the beginning.  Also make sure that the power doesn’t blink during this process and mess up your Internet connection, oh, and, by the way, make sure you have your Internet connection wireless password handy as well.
  6. Be ready for your frustration level to increase each time the cellphone asks you for another piece of information that we didn’t tell you that you needed, and when your process needs to start over asking you about what language your phone should respond to you with.  (Really??)  Really!!
  7. By the way, make sure that you remember your birthday and all the security questions and answers for when you set up any of these accounts because you will definitely be asked some of those questions.  Make sure you know how you spelled things when these accounts were set up several years ago as well as the spacing and capital letters that you used; otherwise, you’ll have to start over again from the beginning entering the phone number and the email address that you’ve already entered multiple times.

Then, the last thing on the concrete-sequential writer’s set of instructions would be a telephone number to call for help for anyone that didn’t know how to follow the instructions or who got so frustrated that they wanted to throw the phone off the boat company dock.

So, please, consider sending in your renewal, and, if you appreciate the live streaming of Mass from Holy Cross, school sports events, or any of the video work that we do, please consider a donation to the Live Streaming Project. Also, if you like what we do, tell your friends.
