BIRHC to Work With NMH in Task Force

The Beaver Island Rural Health Center has entered into an agreement with Northern Michigan Regional Hospital in Petoskey to create a task force comprised of Northern and Health Center representatives. The task force will study potential areas where the Health Center and Northern can develop affiliation that will help the Health Center increase services to its patients and reduce costs. Beaver Island representatives selected to the task force by the board include the Health Center Managing Director, Donna Kubic and board members Don Spencer, Larry Hansz, Jean McDonough, and Sandra Birdsall.

It is anticipated that the task force will complete its study by May 1, 2009. It will then make recommendations on areas where non-exclusive affiliation will be of benefit to Beaver Island . The agreement unanimously approved by the BIRHC Board to create the task force (called a Memorandum of Understanding) is the result of a series of meetings between officials from the Health Center and Northern Michigan Regional Hospital . At the January 31st Health Center Board Meeting, board members heard a presentation from Mr. Tom Mroczkowski, Northern's CEO and Jim Flickema, Senior Director of Professional Services regarding Northern's mission to increase access, improve quality and reduce costs of health care to Northern Michigan residents. Mr. Rodney Nelson, the CEO of Mackinac Straits Hospital and Health Center (which includes the clinic on Mackinac Island) also attended the meeting and described the affiliation which Mackinac Straits has with Northern and the benefits and cost savings derived from that relationship. Some potential areas for cooperation include collaboration by the medical staffs and operational efficiency in areas such as insurance, education, information technology, clinical information and training. Other areas may be indentified during the study process.

Beaver Island already has long standing relationships with several other area medical care providers: Pine River Medical PC, which for over 20 years, has provided primary care physicians who travel to the Health Center biweekly; Charlevoix Hospital for emergency services and digital x-ray; and Munson Health Care for Hospice Services, REMEC connection, medical equipment and furnishings. All of these organizations have provided substantial assistance to the Health Center in the past and the relationships with them will continue. The decisions of BI residents about which provider to use will not be affected by any agreements with Northern. The efforts with Northern are part of the BI Health Center's comprehensive plan to continually search for ways to expand health services available to island residents. The Board and Staff of the Health Center are very appreciative of Northern Michigan Regional Health System's willingness to help our community and excited about the many opportunities that lie ahead.

BICS National Honor Society Competes

On Friday, January 28th, members of the Beaver Island High School National Honor Society competed in a high school Quiz Bowl.  It was held at North Central Michigan College in Petoskey.  After 8 rounds, Beaver Island took 5th place -- out of 14 teams!

It was a fun day of great competition -- and hundreds of challenging questions in many different categories.  The students had a lot of fun and are hoping to return again.  The students representing BI were Kristy Bousquet, Caitlin Boyle, Patrick Cull, Maeve Green and Alexandra Kuligoski.  Our team was very competitive, as you can tell by the final points of the top 5 teams:  Petoskey A Team won with 1185 points, Petoskey C 880 points, Charlevoix A 865, Petoskey B 890 and Beaver Island 835.  (Note:  Rank is first determined by game wins and then points.  Petoskey C had one more win than Charlevoix A and Petoskey B.)

And, if you enjoy watching and playing along with Jeopardy or Cash Cab at home, you might get your chance to enter a Quiz Bowl right here on Beaver Island .  The NHS is looking at putting together a fundraiser in the spring where community members can form their own teams and compete for the Beaver Island Quiz Bowl Title!  We'll keep you posted, but you might want to start studying now.

Friday Night Concert at BICC Wonderful!

This concert was well attended and the gathering at Donegal Danny's was also, as judged by the amount of traffic passing by the corner of Kings Highway and Carlisle Road. Hopefully, it was a financial success for the Beaver Island Community Center which is promoting these excellent concerts and increasing the number of winter activities for the Island.

Beaver Island Trivia

Last Week's Question:

Here is another school picture from ten years earlier. This was the editor's first year of teaching at the BICS. Can you name all of the high school students? Middle school and elementary students?

Top row: Daniel McCafferty, Dana Gillespie, Brian Cole, Gerald LaFreniere, Dennis Kenwabikise, Kenny Kenwabikise, Paul Hart, Wendy Kenwabikise, Debbie LaFreniere, Ernie Martin Jr., Jessie Kenwabikise
2nd row: Chris Welke, Johnny Kenwabikise, Amy Green, Todd McDonough, Barb Hogan, Michelle LaFreniere
3rd row: Kathleen Green, Nancy Wagner, Robert Cole, Lynn McCafferty, Lynn Ann McDonough, Joe Timsak, Ronnie Gregg, Cindy Gillespie, Ann Wojan, Mary Kenwabikise, Beth Ann Green
4th row: Ann Welke, Roy Hogan, Jim McDonough, Bill McDonough, Debbie DeRosia, Rosie Green, Tommy Cole, Tina DeRosia, Paul Cole, John McCafferty, Jimmy Kenwabikise
5th row: Sherry DeRosia, Kevin Green, Garret Cole, Bernedette Cole, Linda Wojan, Kathleen Gillespie, Nick Hogan, Laurel Cole, Pattie Hogan, Diane Kenwabikise, Boots

This correct answer comes from Dan McCafferty and his wife Sarah. Excellent memories are demonstrated here. Am excellent group of BICS students as well as a challenging one. The principal this year was Sister Dennis Marie, who needed an algebra teacher and a music teacher. Quite a combination that was discovered in Mr. Moore.

This Week's Trivia Question:

This is another of the pictures from the past taken at the "old" Beaver Island Community School. This represents a senior pre-graduation picture taken in front of the building. Can you name everyone in the photograph?
