Third Week in January--Harbor Still Open

By the third week in January, normally the harbor is covered with ice, and there is no question about going ice skating on the harbor or moving the fish shanty out on the ice. So far, there is really only skim ice on the harbor. This seems really unusual for this late in January.

Follow-up on this situation. The harbor now has some thin ice all the way out pass the Coast Guard Station. The harbor is now frozen as of January 24, 2008. The thickness of the ice and the safety issue are still unknown, so it might make sense to let the ice get thicker before venturing out on it. It was still open water on January 21, 2008.

Donation Jars

While out and around in our community Monday morning, there were donation jars out to help the Debbie Higdon (Drew) family get past the financial part of their loss. Please help them in any way you can by making a donation. No donation is too small. Help out with as much as you are able. See last week's news for any details about their loss.

Middle School and High School Intercession

So what is an intercession? The Latin word parts and prefixes provide us with an answer. The 'cess' part means 'to go.' The 'inter' prefix means 'betweeen.' So an intercession goes between marking periods. What do students do during intercession? There are different activities that go on. Monday morning found some of the high school students taking pictures with new digital cameras, some were working on pictures already taken for the yearbook, and others were working on putting pages together for the yearbook. Some high school students were playing 'Pictionary' in room nine of the high school area. The plan for the afternoon on Monday included some outdoor activities such as sledding at Mt. Pisgah, ice skating, etc. These activities are much different than the usual school learning activities, but learning is still taking place. Students learn differently at different times. Students learn about their fellow students and their teachers. Social interaction leads to building relationships, which is the foundation of learning. Student's brains are being exercised in different ways during this time that goes between marking periods. Scarf making, picture taking, and rolling in the snow are all good learning activities that exercise students' brains. Keep your brain functioning, but a quick change in kind of activities that you do.

Beaver Island Trivia

Last Week's Question:

What former Beaver Island Community School student is currently seeking and studying for a Doctorate degree in French? (Hint: She did not graduate from BICS.)

The only correct answer came from Sally Lounsberry. Very good answer, Sally! The correct answer is Tekla Sauter. The Sauters helped start up the very first Internet for the Island. The Beaver Island Internet Project or BIIP was started through a consortium with Tekla's mom and dad, Rita and Gene Sauter, helping with the technology and business expertise.

This Week's Question:

"What business of today is located on the same spot as the Gretchen Kanser business named the "Wild Rose Cafe?"

The first correct answer will earn a gift subscription to News on the 'Net for the months of February, March, and April for the person of your choice, anyone who is not already a subscriber. Email your answers to: medic5740@gmail.com
