Boyne Thunder Poker Run Benefits Camp Quality

These noisy, hence the name "Thunder" racing boats visited Beaver Island between 10:30 and 11:00 a.m. on July 21, 2007. There were about 40 boats in this years Boyne Thunder poker run. Ken Slater and Steve West staffed the card boat which is owned by Slater. Each year the Chamber of Commerce provides logistic support for the event.

"It's a real pleasure to help the Boyne Thunder group raise tens of thousands of dollars for Camp Quality," said Chamber Executive Director Steve West .

There was also a helicopter and a seaplane monitoring the race, probably news crews from somewhere.

Quite a few people were watching from different vantage points. Some at the public beach where the poker cards were handed out from the boat on the bottom right picture, and some out at the Coast Guard Station.

Ladies Golf Tournament, July 21, 2007

The Ladies' Golf Tournament was held between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. this Saturday, July 21, 2007, and it had a great turnout. There were nine teams of four on each team. The ladies scores by team number is shown here:

Team number five had the lowest score of 36. The members of team five, who were the winners of the tournament, were Jane Maher, Jean Howell, Jayne Bailey, and Marianne Brown. They each received a plaque that read "Beaver Island Ladies Golf Tournament Winner 2007."

The lunch was provided as part of the tournament and the socializing began in earnest after the teams were finished with golf.

Each person got a gift for participating in the tournament.

A proper thank-you was provided to the cooks and servers.

And a proper thanks was given to the organizers.

Here the organizers and three of the four winners posed for a photo together.

Jayne Bailey was unavailable for this photo.

Beaver Island Trivia

Last Week's Question:

What was the name of the last Dominican Sister who served as principal at the Beaver Island Community School?

This trivia question drew three guesses which included Sister Rita and Sister Marie Eugene, which were not correct.

The last nun to serve as principal in the Beaver Island Community School was Sister Dennis Marie Kurt.

This Week's Question:

Who was the bass player who came over to the Island and played with Hogie Hogan, Jewel Gillespie, and Ed Palmer at Holy Cross Dances in the early 1980's?
