Baroque on Beaver Brass Quintet

Jim Luteyn welcomed all to the performance. Approximately eighty-three were in the audience.

The Baroque on Beaver Brass Quintet performed in the Holy Cross Church on Friday, July 29, 2011, beginning at 2 p.m.. The performers were Matt Thomas, trumpet; Brian Sutherland, trumpet; Robert Pavelek, horn; Dan Spencer, trombone; and Sam Griggs, tuba.

The first piece on the program was Contrapunctus, from Art of the Fugue, by Johann Sebastian Bach, arranged for the brass quintet. This was followed by The Fairy Round, which was a repetition of the same motif by each of the instruments, which was passed around again and again.

The brass quintet in performance....Two instruments that may not be familiar to the orchestra goers are the trombone and the tuba.

The other instruments on the left side are French horn and trumpets.

Each piece was introduce by the group's leader.

The Renaissance Madrigal Suite was next on the program. Three of the fours pieces in this suite were performed by the B on B Brass Quintet. They were Wing We and Chant it, The Silver Swan, and Mother, I Will Have a Husband.

During the intermission, several photos were taken to capture the mood of the performance,. Most were done without the knowledge of the person whose picture was taken.

The concert continued with Three Pieces: Maestoso alla Marcia, Andante con moto, and Allegro grazioso, un poco agitato, by Ludwig Maurer.

The group ended the performance with three very familiar compositions that might not fit the definition of 'Classic' music in the sense of the time period in which they were composed and performed. These pieces of music fit another definition of "Classic" in that each song is a classic.

A Nightingale Sang in Berkely's Square by Manning Sherwin and Eric Maschwitz was followed by fly Me to the Moon by Bart Howard, and the finale was El Gato Montes by Manuel Penella.

This was a marvelous mixture of music. It was performed with excellence and obvious joy by this group. If you weren't there, you missed a great opportunity!

Water Music

Ruth Igoe welcomed a completely full Holy Cross Hall.

Water Music was the title of program presented at the Holy Cross Parish Hall on Thursday evening beginning at 7:30 p.m. The program began with the Overture to the Flyng Dutchman by Richard Wagner. The following piece was from a less known composer Frederick Delius, Two Pieces for Small Orchestra, On hearing the first Cuckoo in Spring and Summer night on the river.

In good teaching style, Robert Nordling, conductor of the Baroque on Beaver Orchestra, spent time explaining selections of the program to the packed into the hall audience, who listened intently to his explanations.

After the first two compositions were perfromed by the orchestra, the woodwinds from the orchestra presented Ancient Hungarian Dances by Rerenc Farkas. There were five dances in this suite, Intrada, Lassu, Lapockas Tanc, Chorea, and Ugras.

The orchestra reformed after a short intermission to perform George Frederic Handel's Water Music Suite, the name of the performance for the evening. The suite consisted of Allegro, Alla hornpipe, Lentement, Bourree, and Minuet.

Then came the final piece of the evening by Felix Mendolssohn, Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage. Robert Nordling introduced the piece to the audience. He also thanked the community and supporters for the opportunity to work with these

Rita Gillespie Memorial Blood Drive on July 28, 2011

The American Red Cross blood drive for Beaver Island wae held at the Gregg Fellowship Center on Thursday, July 28, 2011, from noon until 5:45 p.m.

The annual event was sponsored by the Beaver island Christian Church, Holy Cross Catholic Church, and the St. James Episcopal Church with support from the Beaver Island Boat Company and Island Airways.

The Rita Gillespie Memorial Blood Drive was quite successful this year. Seventy-seven (77) came to give blood. sixty-five (65) units of blood were taken, and of those eight (8) were first time donors.

US Coast Guard Helo Medically Evacuates Motorcycle Accident Victim from Beaver Island

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. -A Beaver Island Paramedic transfers a man from a Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter to a Northflight ambulance crew in Traverse City, Mich., after he was medically evacuated in the helicopter off of Beaver Island, Mich., July 27, 2011.

Paramedics on the island requested that Air Station Traverse City transport the man after he was injured in a motorcycle accident there.

Fundraising Recital Presents World Premiere Composition

(11:45 pm, 7/26/11) While the last thing on the program, the world premiere of the performance of a composition that involved all of the performers of the evening and our local writer Robert Cole was an amazing event. The presentation of the evening world premiere involved a reading of Robert Cole's poetry with glorious musical interludes in between. This was the ending composition of the fundraising recital, the first of several concerts in the Beaver Island Cultural Arts Association Baroque on Beaver Summer Music Festival.

The performers in this world premiere included Martha Guth, soprano; Albert Wang, violin; Joan Van Dessel, clarinet; and Kenneth Bos, piano. The world premiere composition was entitled Something About Autumn. The music composer was Thomas Cipullo. The poetry was written by Robert Cole. The presentation was divided into six parts: Midnight St. James Harbor I, Distant Music, Midnight St. James Harbor II, What if..., Midnight St. James Harbor III, and Something About Autumn. The presentation received a standing ovation. The only word that can describe the presentation is simply amazing.

Kathleen McNamara's Welcome

The audience packed the Beaver Island Community Center with very few empty seats. All the auditorium seats were filled and two rows of chairs were placed in front of those. Kathleen McNamara Green welcomed everyone on behalf of the Beaver Island Cultural Arts Association and thanked everyone for their support of this recital and the rest of the music festival. The program began with Sonata for Violin No. 2 in G minor by George Frederic Handel performed by Albert Wang.

The violin solo was followed by Fantasiestucke for Clarinet and Piano by Robert Schuman performed by Joan Van Dessel on clarinet and Kenneth Bos on piano.

Martha Guth was next on the program performing with Kenneth Bos accompaniment on piano two pieces by Samuel Barber, Nocturne and Sure on This Shining Night. Martha's gorgeous voice surrounded the audience and stage and brought tears to your eyes.

This fundraising recital was well received. One recital attendee stated, "A little bit of heaven on Paradise Bay. World class musicians and performance right here on Beaver Island and a world premiere besides."

Osprey Hatchlings Growing Up

During this busy summer season for the businesses and visitors to Beaver Island, nature just keeps doing what nature does. The young birds are getting bigger, growing and learning. Whether you see them out at your bird feeder or drive down Sloptown Road and get a look at the osprey hatchlings, you will see the tendency of nature to continue to repeat herself. Lots of new animals are visiting the feeder, and the young ospreys are now visible since they are too big to all fit inside the nest now. Here is a video of one of the adults on the highest point and one of the young ospreys calling for lunch or dinner.

Meet the Baroque on Beaver Participants on the Boat July 25th

Some of the participants for Baroque on Beaver came early, but the 'meet the boat' tradition has continued with these relativley new visitors and summer residents. Here is a video clip of the many B on B people on the late afternoon boat, the Emerald Isle. Maestros, violinists, sopranos, basses, and others from around the world, country, and state arrive and greet each other no matter how famous. They are all here on Beaver Island for a week of heavenly human contact with classical music as the motive. We are glad you are here!

Parking in Charlevoix

First of all, BINN wants to welcome its newest business subscriber, Mainland Parking and Shuttle Service.

The parking issue at the Charlevoix Airport has caused some consternation to some people who have parked their vehicle there. (See the story and update below.) The City of Charlevoix has taken over management of the airport, and has hired an airport manager. This manager appears to view the Islanders using the airport for parking as just another source of income for the airport.

Mainland Parking and Shuttle Service is a new business located just down the road from the airport. Mainland is literally directly across the highway from Dr. Shaperkotter's office. If that doesn't ring a bell, then it is next to an old motel and before Fox Motors. They have a nice sign that indicates the location. If going south from the airport, it will be on your left side.

The editor of BINN met with one of the two partners in this venture, Daniel J Drost to see an enthusiastic person who wants to help resolve these parking issues for the Islanders. The business is just getting off the ground floor with just one year round parking permit issued at this time. Mr. Drost wants to make certain that everyone knows that they began this venture because of the City's position on the parking at the airport. Mr. Drost wants to let everyone know that he has done work over here on the island, spent money here for lodging, meals, and relaxation at the local pubs. He is interested in providing lots of service for the Island residents and visitors. In a conversation today, July 22, 2011, he stated, "If someone was needing us to go pick up something at one of the businesses in the area, we would be glad to pick it up and send it over on the plane. We would like to work with the flight services. Perhaps they (the flight services) might be willing to let us know when the owner of a car is flying over to the mainland. We could then have the car ready, warmed up if its cold outside, and ready to go. We fully expect that we might need to jump a car or two if the battery goes dead. That will all be part of the Parking Service that we offer. We had a few people who went over on the boat as customers this week. They came and picked me up, and I drove them back down to the boat dock, then brought the car out here. There was no extra charge for this service. Of course, we did it exactly in reverse when they came back to the mainland."

For this extra service, Mainland Parking and Shuttle Service charges the exact same amount as the City of Charlevoix at the airport. They have an economy plan that allows you to be responsible for you own transportation to your car, but be sure to talk to them about this, if you are interested. BINN has the second year round parking permit at Mainland Parking and Shuttle Service, and is more than willing to share our experience with you.

Museum Week Art Show

It is always an amazing walk through the Gregg Fellowship Center, the location of the Museum Week Art Show. There are so many different skills and artisans who place items in the show. The editor took a little editorial license by placing the artists name on the photographs of the art. Several photographs were taken that were not used in this story, but space is somewhat limited. These pictures were taken on the first day of the art show, Wednesday. The show continues through part of Friday. Go check it out.

Today, Thursday, was the scheduled book signing.

The Cashman book was present and some information about the Ruth and Ray Denny Memorial Art Show.

A wide variety of artists and artistic styles are present at this show, even model aircraft.

There are a great deal more paintings, framed photographs, and crafts at this art show. It is well worth seeing all the talent that is present on Beaver Island right now. Go take advantage of this inspiring exhibit.

Chicago to Mackinac Race Boats Visit Beaver Island

On their way back to home port, several of the sailing vessels made a traditional stop in Paradise Bay, Beaver Island. There were quite a few sailboats rafted off each other at the public marina in the harbor. There were more boats coming in when this picture was taken, but it was getting somewhat dark so no more photos were taken.

Museum Week Music on the Porch

Monday evening at 7:30 pm, during Museum Week, is always a very special night. Lots of chairs are brought to the roadway in front of the Print Shop Museum for the traditional Music on the Porch. This year was no different in schedule, but was tagged as "one of the best" by several who attended. There was a really nice mix of music from many different genre, and a great deal of applause was interrupted by toe-tapping, hand-clapping, and several "Wow's."

Mike and Sharon Hurkmans set up their own sound equipment with some help from Phil Becker which included a PA, mike stands, and microphones. The Hurkmans were on deck all night to adjust the volume, move and point microphones, and generally help out with the performances in any way needed.

Kathy Speck's second year of putting together this wonderful evening of music was well received. Kathy Speck introduced each group and thanked each person after their performance. Great job, Kathy!

An original, written-for-the-occasion song, written in the last three days about the train wreck on the island, was performed by the computer accompanying himself on guitar.

The highlight of the eveing was the marvelous display of talent of the the Gerrish grandchildren whose grandpa even played with them. Their program began with an apology to Bach, and continued with barbershop like singing which surprised us all. "Wimawheh, a whimawheh" still rings in some ear drums as the "mighty jungle" was sung to surprise everyone.

The performer following the Gerrish group was quite vocal about following the Everly Brothers or something like that, but Kevin Bousquet did a fine job on guitar and singing.

Another surprise, along with two more, was the singing of Emily Boyle, first earlier with Larry Hall and then after by herself.

The last surprise was an a capella song done by Dr. Lange's daughter Lisa.

A few others returned to sing again, but the performance was just the right length with just the right mix of styles. Thanks to all who performed. Thanks to the Hurkmans and to Kathy Speck fror another great Music on the Porch.

Beaver Island Turkey Hunt



Just a reminder to all the Turkey hunters out there. We do have a fall turkey hunt. There is no application required, but you have to purchase a license. The area is YY and you can purchase a license a day for turkey starting August 29. Turkeys were very successful this breeding season and we need to make the flocks smaller going into winter. Plus Turkey meat is great!

Former Worship Leader of BI Christian Church Returns for Service

Curt Petrak and his wife Joan have been on the island for about two weeks where they had a mini family reunion for part of last week. After being in a tent for a week, Curt and Joan were more than happy to move into the parsonage for this past week of July 11-17, 2011. Curt gave the sermon and led the service at the Christian Church on Sunday, July 17, 2011, and his wife Joan performed on the organ to lead the singing.

Expecting an interesting homily, the editor attended the service and was amazed at the wonderful history reported by and the sincere love shown by the Petraks for the Beaver Island Christian Church. Of course, some of us knew them when they lived here, and knew that they were very involved with the Christian Church. The editor was so impressed by the history presented and the love shown that BINN provides you with a written copy of the sermon which was a combined history and lesson of service. The sermon may be viewed HERE in its entirety.

Wiping his eyes a few times during the sermon, Curt provided an excellent history of the Christian Church and spoke of many of the founders fondly. The title of his sermon was Answering God's Call to Build His Church.

Talking Threads Busy This Year

The Talking Threads Quilt Guild has been busy the past few months with a couple of interesting projects.

In May, they participated in the project “Just One Star (can comfort a soldier)” co-sponsored by Moda Fabrics and quilt shops across the country, including Hearts to Holly Quilt Shop in Charlevoix. Each quilter who participated was given a star block pattern and color requirements to make a quilt square which they signed with their name and state.

The quilt squares were gathered together in Dallas TX where they will be put into quilts for our soldiers. Those participating in the workshop were: Donna Stambaugh, Betty Scoggin, Tina Morgan, Chris Butler, Sharon Hurkmans, Kathy Richards, Judi Meister, Darlene Dooley, Heidi Vigil. Sally Lounsberry, Erin Myers, Katie LaFreniere, and Tessa Jones assisted as pressers and “go-fers”. Pictured are the 21 blocks that the Talking Threads Quilt Guild sent to Charlevoix. Hearts to Holly was able to send 450 blocks; countrywide, thousands of blocks were made and Moda is working hard to complete at least 100 quilts for our service people. What a terrific project!! Thank you, soldiers, for all you do for us—this seems like s small thank you for your sacrifices.

In June, the Quilt Guild gathered in Gregg Fellowship Center to make valences for the windows as a memorial to Sally Davis. Sally, who passed away in March, had been an active member of the quilt guild for many years and the group thought this would be a fitting, lasting memorial for a delightful lady who helped us with so many projects.

Gathering together to help make the valences were Ann Miller, Penny Young, Tessa Jones, Kathy Ruis, MaryAnn Ridgeway, Tina Morgan, Sharon Hurkmans, Judy Jones, Judi Meister, Sandy Bartels, Chris Butler, Sallly Lounsberry, and Ellen Kuligoski.

Because I make videos in High Definition, you can watch the video in HD right on YouTube. On the bottom of the video is the play-bar. On the right side of the play-bar is a small button that may say "360p". If you click this button, you can choose higher res versions to watch. Choosing "720p HD" is the highest quality and works well with our TDS bandwidth. This option is only available for movies made in High Definition.

You can also click the "full-screen" button on the bottom-right corner to enter full screen mode. When you're done, press the "esc" key on your keyboard to exit full-screen.

Included in the presentation are 795 fades and motion paths were created; 13 special graphics were created, animated and used; over 12 custom-created special effects; and 101 custom, animated titles were created and placed with motion paths. One original song with lyrics was written and composed for the video, all about Beaver Island. The song includes: 2 vocal tracks, 2 guitar tracks (a 12-string guitar and an Ovation Classic guitar), a Celtic Flute, a Celtic Violin, a full Drum Kit, Kettle Drums, and a Stringed Orchestra. The song is only part of the soundtrack for the video. The soundtrack also includes: a full narration track, and many mixed sound effects some of which were recorded "live" on Beaver Island.

Some of the materials came from places like the USGS Geological Survey, NASA LandSat imagery, US Fish and Wildlife Service, MacKiev Software Company, and others.

Beaver Island Music Festival Saturday Afternoon

On Saturday, July 16, 2011, Phyllis Moore took a trip down to the music festival. She reports that she saw three bands perform: The Northern Skies, My Sweet Patootie, and Andro. She got some excellent pictures of the bands and the crowd there enjoying the music.

There were even people we recognized in the photos like Jim and Donna Stambaugh, Kimberly Read, Melvin and Alvina NaPont, and the girls from the historical society.

The memorial service for Sally Davis is scheduled for Sunday, July 31, 11:30 a.m. at Beaver Island Christian Church. This is a separate service, NOT part of the regular Sunday morning worship service that begins at 10 a.m.. There will be lunch afterwards at the Gregg Fellowship Center; McDonough's will have a sign-up sheet for a dish to pass, probably a little closer to the actual date.

GARDEN TOUR BENEFIT RESULTS IN FULL ATTENDANCE AND GREAT FUN

How nice to find so many Beaver Island residents and visitors with an interest in spending their day walking the gardens of 7 unique owners and hearing their tales of planning, planting, building and toiling to bring their little piece of paradise into the wonderful shape it was today. Thirty-eight driven attendees, as well as ten bikers and walkers, started their tour at the lovely harbor home of Capt. Matt and Wendy Fogg.

Wendy delighted us with tales of the historic Fogg property as well as photos of the transformation over the century. Her lavender iced tea was tasty, and her entertaining little helper (Westie McGruff) got the crowd off to a fun start.

On we ventured to Melvin and Alvina Napont's historic site. Her garden was a mixture of nature's bounty; shapely tree stumps, painted rocks, cute little forest creatures, as well as flowers and shrubs. Her totem and staff represented her family lineage and her tale of the tea kettle from her grandmother which is filled with flowers was most interesting. Her face beamed with pride as we all took in her lovely garden.

Just behind the Christian Church lays a lovely beckoning garden at the home of John and Joyce Erber. Joyce has plotted and planted for over 20 years here. She told us the names of her unusual and plentiful flowers. Her well-tended bed in front included an asparagus mound, cosmos, lillies, and a 22 year-old rhododendron!! They also have a vegetable garden and berry patch in back of the house. What a delight this was!

Steve and Elle Hagerman have captured the essence of victorian living with a “self-sustainable” twist at their home. The guests were enraptured by her amazing vegetable array growing atop a three foot high stone wall which circled the lawn. Beside that was the sculpture garden filled with angels and lovely boulders and a totem pole depicting their Beaver Island friends. (Their dog, cat, and a rogue chipmunk are on the totem, too!)

Lunch was a must at this point and we meandered over to the Lodge for a scrumptuous salad luncheon prepared by the new chef Simon Perron. The tables were adorned with little pots of flowers grown at the Beaver Island Gardens, courtesy of Heidi Vigil, which added a continuity to our garden theme.

The Laurain Lodge beckoned some of us to stop there after lunch and tour their lovely spot. (We even got a peak into their newly refurbished condos.)

Then on to the home of Gene Masta and Linda Wolf(SP?) Gene's never-ending garden was a welcome stop during the hottest part of the day. He furnished us with tales of interesting plants and trees and shrubs. His hostas were too numerous to count, and the variety was mind boggling. His garden was a perfect spot for photos and many cameras continued to snap after the van and bus moved on!!

Pinky Harmon presented the history behind the wonderful memory garden beside the priest's home. The towering cross built by Bud Cruikshank is made of redwood! The bricks are still being purchased to honor or memorialize loved ones on the island. There is even a stone from the “911” site embedded. there. Those who haven't seen this site should take the time to visit. The view of the harbor from atop this hill is unbelievable!

We moved on to Laurie Souder's home next and besides her front yard of lovely plantings, she showed us the back yard, filled with 4 foot high Primroses, hollyhocks and other perennials. They all surround a circular fence. When asked if she was worried about deer damage she said “sometimes, but mostly she didn't want her own dacshunds (sp??)to demolish the plants. What a clever way to hide a dog run !!

Our last stop was to be at the south harbor beach home of Peter and Ruth Igoe.

They have created a palette of lovely prairie flowers, which produce an abundance of seeds that are lovingly sprinkled by the Igoe grandchildren in late August each year. Ruth's photos of her grandkids doing this was delightful, as well as the granddaughter with her zuchini in arms, trying to help out her grandpa Peter and his very organized, tidy, vegetable garden of numerous varieties. They also have an extensive perennial garden that winds around the beach house and includes many irises, cosmos, black-eyed susans, astilbe and catmint ,to name a few. Ruth treated all to iced tea and lemon bars on her lovely porch.

The wonderful day ended with a small gathering at Donegal Danny's for a sip of wine, and last minute bidding on the quilt. Angel Welke put in the last bid on the sheet and she and Paul will be taking home their winnings. It all has come full circle.

July Library News

Wow! It's been a busy beginning to summer at the library. Connie Wojan graciously agreed to do the Children's Story Time again this year to our delight. The children are enthralled with her stories and totally enjoy the various craft projects she comes up with.

On July 7 th the library hosted 19 little girls, ages 4 to 7, for a Princess Party. Michelle LaFreniere was fantastic at planning, organizing and baking very special cookies. Her assistant was Kimberly Read who kept the girls entertained by reading princess stories and teaching them how to do the princess wave, the curtsy and how to dance. Each little princess left with a special cup as a reminder.

For those interested in learning how to communicate with babies using the American Sign Language, July 11 th saw Andrea Moore teaching baby signing. Hopefully this is something we can repeat in another year as more people discover how easy it is to do.

The Jolly Roger was flying over the library on July 14 th as little pirates, ages 4 to 7, set sail for uncharted waters. Island pirate, Captain James “Swamp Man” Stambaugh, thrilled the little boys with breath-taking tales of life on the high seas. The little pirates each took home a special pirate mug. Again Michelle LaFreniere outdid herself in organizing and planning this event.

Remember that we do have Ancestry for Libraries for those of you interested in climbing your family tree. It's free within the library and already bookmarked on our public computers.

In the Langford Music Room our music system up and running again thanks to Don Langford. We were in withdrawal for a couple weeks and the patrons missed it. We also, over the past couple of months, enjoyed watching the eagles hatch and learn to fly. Now we have a mama robin sitting on three eggs via the live webcam. Stop in and check it out in the Music Room.

At the end of the month, on July 28 th and 29 th , the library will be holding a huge book sale (weather permitting – in case of rain we'll move it back a day). Please plan on stopping by and checking out the huge selection of books from hundreds of different authors. We'll have books on cooking, decorating, crafting, romance, mysteries, non-fiction, children's books, and lots more.

Forest View Senior Housing Apartments Grand Opening

The weather didn't cooperate very well today in getting the people participating in this Grand Opening Celebration to Beaver Island in a timely manner. First it was rain, and then it was fog, but the State of Michigan participants were not able to get to the island until after 11:30 a.m., so the beginning of the ceremony was delayed for a little less than an hour.

There were plenty of refreshments and lots to look at while the wait took place.

Lots of socializing, introductions, and last minute preparations to complete.

Then the announcement was made that the State plane would be arriving in about ten minutes.

One of the participants from the State of Michigan remarked, "It doesn't get any more rural than this." The absolutely most important statement made during the entire event in this editor's estimation. The program was then about ready to begin, so Phil Hoffman, the Master of Ceremonies, began the program. He introduced Sheriff Don Schneider, who lead the assembly in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.

Phil Hoffman, Master of Ceremonies, commented that this whole effort would not have happened without the perseverance and dedication of Pete LoDico.

Beaver Island is home for many seniors as well as the location of their immediate families, friend, and natural support systems. Historically, seniors who have been unable to maintain their homes or who were isolated onthe Island had to leave the Island to see Necessary housing and medical care on the mainland. The Forest View Community is designed to meet the long-term housing needs of seniors and disable adults living on Beaver Island.

Meet Father Joe Blasko

Father Joe Blasko has been involved with the Diocese of Gaylord since 1999, and is now working as the Archivist for the Diocese in addition to his assignment to Holy Cross Parish, Beaver Island. He likes outdoor activities including cross country skiing, snowshoeing, biking, and golf.

Holy Cross Altar Society Raffles Original Lighthouse Painting by Lois Stipp

The Holy Cross Altar Society is doing its annual raffle for fundraising. The Altar Society will be selling raffle tickets from now until October when the Bite of Beaver takes place. This smaller print of the original painting will be presented to the altar society member who sells the most tickets. The drawing will take place on October 8, 2011, at 2 pm at Holy Cross Parish Hall. The tickets are on the island, and they should be available now. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. They will be for sale after mass on weekends, at McDonough's' Market, or you can contact Audrey Beilman for more information at 448-2083. St. James Township Meeting, July 6, 2011

The meeting began with the quick approval of bills and minutes. The discussion about the DNR-required sewer system began anew. The costs of original installation was discussed as well as the increase in monthly cost of being connected. One taxpayer was concerned about the cost of the FOIA request from the engineering firm, the cost being slightly more than $180. A motion was passed to have the township pay that FOIA cost. It was reported by Township Supervisor Rick Speck that the Phragmities location and GPS locations had met a hurdle. All of the first ten hours of data was lost in a tech glitch. This work will all have to be repeated. The supervisor reminded the board and public of the Board of Review to take place on July 22, 2011. The board discussed the mileage reimbursement for employees and agreed to pay the federal rate of $.51 per mile as long as the employee documented the date and the specific activity. The St. James Township Board passed a motion to approve the resolution for the creation of the Natural Resources and Eco-Tourism Steering Committee unanimously. During public comment, the lack of a flag at Whiskey Point was discussed. Jim Wojan is working on this issue with CMU Biological Station, the owners of the property. A revised driving guide was authorized for printing by the township. Bud Martin discussed the possibility of building a break wall along the edge of the drop off Whiskey Point to create a park. He mentioned that there might be federal money to fund this project. The townships agreed to the extent that work will begin in the near future to update the Recreation Plan, which would be the first step toward applying for grant money. Rick Speck suggested that this might take about two years, but that it would be a good idea to update the plan for application for funding of any project since it is required by the state.

Rather than just throwing your expired prescription drugs or over the counter drugs in the trash or down the drain, the Beaver Island Rural Health Center has become a "pill drop off" location. Bike Event Will Precede Boodle 5K in October

A bike ride to benefit Beaver Island Sports Boosters will be held, Saturday, Oct., 8, 2011, at 8 a.m . Bikers will meet at beach parking lot next to Holy Cross Parish Hall , bike 2-12 miles and make a donation of your
choice based on miles biked. Flyers will be posted around town after July 4th and be available at the Chamber of Commerce office . Bike rental is available. You could make it a duathlon if you register for and run or walk the Island Boodle 5K at 10 a.m Registration fee benefits the Beaver Island Sports Boosters. Men's Golf League, Hot and Heavy Competition Continues

The Men's Golf League team competition is hot and heavy with the team that is having a good round moving up in the standings. That means that the team NOT having a good night is moving down in the standings.

The competition is still very hot and heavy pretty much like the weather. Howard Davis and Joe Moore moved into first place by three points by scoring fifteen points in week ten. Ryan Smith and Jeff Mestelle moved into second by "only" scoring twelve. Rob Latimer and Dan Merriman moved into third place due to a loss to Howard and Joe.

The Human Services Commission of Peaine and St. James townships has put together a resource manual--a guide to services available to all residents of Beaver Island. Update: 2/19/11---This video has had 108 viewings in the months of January and February so far. We hope that the views are getting the importance of having an air ambulance on Beaver Island and ready to go for the emergencies that have occurred here. It is obvious that ill and injured people are searching out other methods of transport since the transports for 2010 were down 50% compared to the last four years. While part of the cause is the depressed economy, the other part is the concern of being transported to the mainland and having a huge bill for that transport. BINN will continue to have this video available until something gets resolved with this issue. Comments so far: "You must be very proud of your son for doing this excellent video." "We never realized that this was still an issue." "Wow, a very important issue that seems to have been put on the back burner for too long. It's a burning issue."

Beaver Island has two flight services, and neither of them are currently certified or licensed to transport emergency patients from Beaver Island to the mainland. We thank the crews of the USCG helicopters for coming to do medical evacuations. We thank the flight services that have helped us get patients to the mainland for the last seven years and before. We thank Northflight for providing this service as well.

While a lot of things have changed over the last 7 years including a new school, a new executive director of EMS, new township supervisors,and new rural health center board members, there is one thing that has not changed.

Beaver Island does not have an FAA Certified Air Ambulance that is licensed by the State of Michigan.

When Phillip Michael Moore made this video as a Master's degree project, no one would have guessed that seven years later Beaver Island would still not have achieved this goal.

Please take the time to view the video. Please take some time to think about this, and then start asking some questions about how this can be resolved.
