On April 12th, Congressman Bart Stupak will be on Beaver Island for a Town Hall Meeting that evening. Congressman Stupak represents the Michigan 1st District (D) in Washington. He is a member of the House Energy and Commerce Commission. Time and place will be posted later.
While the first day of spring is noted on all calendars as being March 20th, the Beaver Island "official" day of spring will be a few days later, on the 23rd when the ferry Emerald Isle will begin the 2006 season thanks to a very mild winter and very little ice in the harbor. The schedule will be as follows for the first three special runs weather permitting:
March 23rd leaves Beaver Island at 8:30 a.m. and leaves Charlevoix at 11:30 a.m.
March 31st leaves Beaver Island at 8:30 a.m. and leaves Charlevoix at 11:30 a.m.
April 10th leaves Beaver Island at 8:30 a.m. and leaves Charlevoix at 11:30 a.m.
For the ferry schedule for the rest of the season, please visit the Beaver Island Boat Company website at www.bibco.com
At the AMVET's meeting on March 16th, Phil Gregg was presented with the Patriot Medallion of Honor by Bob Drebenstadt, Director of the Charlevoix County Office of Veteran Affairs. This medallion can be presented to any veteran of WWII for valor, sacrifice and military duty. Special thanks go to Jeff Cashman who took the photo of Phil receiving his award. Congratulations, Phil.

The Beaver Island Christian Church is planning a Mission "Work" Trip to Southern Alabama to help with Hurricane Katrina relief. It is a truly ecumenical effort. We will be working under the direction of both the Presbyterian and Lutheran Church. We will be staying in a church building and eating breakfast there, taking a sack lunch to work, and eating our evening meal again at the church. We will be working in Bayou La Batre, Alabama and staying in Grand Bay, Alabama. The plans now are to leave May 4th and return on May 14th. All the details have not yet been worked out, so a lot of questions cannot be answered at this time. We will try to do what ever is asked of us to do. Power tools are in place, we need to bring hand tools, men and women are welcome! We need cooks and bottle washers, "go fores" and just plain willing hands and loving hearts. There is no cost for materials, but we will be responsible for transportation costs down and back, gas, meals and possibly two nights in a motel. If you would like to join us or have questions, please contact Bob and Peg Hoogendoorn at 448-2142 or Pastor Steve Skinner at 448-3154. What we need most is prayer that we be used to help others and bring glory to God. Every one on the island is welcome, if you cannot go but would like to contribute to the cost, please make the check out to the Beaver Island Christian Church and put "Mission Trip" in the memo and give to one of the afore mentioned people. Thanks!!
Next Monday will mark the "official" beginning of the spring. Have you noticed that this is the only season that hits women like PMS? It's called Spring Cleaning and men never seem to get hit by the urge to clean - unless it's their golf clubs and fishing tackle. I've noticed a few things that are precursors to that season you probably won't find on those cute calendars but they are annual signs around the Moore household. For example:
I can't help wondering if it just might be easier to move rather than try to clean this place out. Right now it has true character or should that be it houses characters?
Saturday dawned an absolutely perfect day on Beaver Island - clear sky, lots of sunshine, and very little wind. Of course it wouldn't have been a spring-like day without mud on the roads but what the heck. My youngest daughter needed some driving time and I wanted to get out for some picture taking so we headed down the island. We crossed paths with several deer, checked out the creeks, she climbed the lighthouse and took a few photos, we checked out Iron Ore Bay and then headed back home. We thought we'd share the day with you.
