In a very exciting day today, Saturday, October 20, 2007, the Beaver Island Community School soccer team played very hard to a tie with Paradise after winning a game against Hannaville. Because the total amount of playing time cannot exceed 180 minutes, no overtime was allowed. The only choice was to have a shoot-out. One-on-one, a player shooting on goal against a goalie. Due to the skills of the entire BICS team, but particularly to the skill of Eric Albin as goalie, Beaver Island won the shoot-out and progressed to the finals against Mackinac Island.
The two Island teams, Beaver and Mackinac, battled to a one to one tie. Beaver Island won the shoot-out and therefore won the Northern Lights League Tournament. Pictures and more story to follow in the next day or so. Congratulations to Beaver Island for first place in the NLL Tournament and to Mackinac Island for second!!
On Tuesday, October 16, 2007, our girls' volleyball team went to Hannaville to play against Mackinac Island and Hannville in a tri-meet. The team got stuck in the UP due to weather, so they couldn't return until Wednesday morning. Here is the report on the trip from Coach Connie Boyle.
Beaver Island lost to Hannahville. We lost 3 out of 4 games. The game scores were 17-25, 18-25, 25-17, 18-25.

The professional group from Ann Arbor called the Chenille Sisters performed on the Island this past weekend. Beautiful close harmonies as well as nostalgic songs and just pure entertainment with lots of laughs included. How many years have these ladies been performing together?
The correct answer was received by email from Pam Moxham. These ladies have been singing together for 22 years, and they "started when they were very young."
Lisa Rose is a visiting paramedic. She provides advanced life support services to the Island residents and visitors when she is on the Island, and she taught two paramedic classes right here on Beaver Island with co-instructors Steve Rose and Joe Moore. Lisa has island ties. Her mother and father lived and worked on Beaver Island. Can you name her mother and father?
The first correct answer will earn a gift subscription to News on the 'Net for the months of October, November, and December for the person of your choice. Email your answers to firstname.lastname@example.org.

Andrea Jo Moore, daughter of Phyllis and Joe Moore, was not present to play in the last volleyball homegame of the season for the Islander Volleyball team. Instead she was down in Mount Pleasant at Central Michigan University competing against 1800 other hopefuls, the best of the best of high school students, for a Centralis Scholarship.
Twenty-one Centralis Scholarships, worth approximately $65,000 each, are available each year. An additional twenty-one scholarships are available for approximately half that amount. Eighteen hundred Michigan students were competing for forty-two scholarships.
The competition day activities included financial aid workshops for parents and students, a motivational speaker, and a panel discussion and answers to parent questions. Although a great deal of the day was spent discussing financial matters, a bus tour of the campus was provided to parents, and several departments had information booths available, so this was more like an information fair than a competition.
The students had fifty minutes to read an article and write an essay. December 4, 2007, is the date that students will have to have all credentials sent to CMU, and two days later, the semi-finalists will be asked to fill out a Centralis application. The winners will receive notification by the end of January 2008.
Good luck Andrea!

This writing is not about any really controversial topic in politics or religion. It is simply about how lucky Beaver Island is to have the wireless solutions presented by Central Solutions. A simple example will result. Uploading the pictures for this week's website was done through a motel wireless connection in Charlevoix. The best speed that could be obtained through this connection was 2 Mbs. It took more than two hours to upload the pictures. It hasn't taken that long to do this one thing since the older days of dialup connections. I hope that all the pictures got there successfully. If not, I'll try to fix them when I get back to the Island later on Monday. Thank you Brian and Matt of Central Solutions for what you are trying to accomplish on Beaver Island.
