Phyllis' Daily Weather

November 7, 2016

Another beautiful, clear sky this morning that is draped in a netting of stars. Well worth waking early and going outside to try and take it all in. So glad I live here because I doubt that city folks get skies like this. AND today is the last day we have to listen to all these awful political commercials! Anyhow, on to the weather. Word of the day: bathos (BEY-thos, -thaws, -thohs) which means 1) insincere pathos; sentimentality; mawkishness. 2) a ludicrous descent from the exalted or lofty to the commonplace; anticlimas. 3) triteness or triviality in style. Its current sense dates to Alexander Pope's essay (1727) Peri Bathous "On Depth," whose title is taken from the essay Peri Hypsous "On the Sublime" of the otherwise unknown Longinus, who lived between the first and third centuries A.D.

Letter in Support of EMS and ALS

November 5, 2016

Dear Beaver Islanders,

I am a Beaver Island property owner, and my dad was born on Beaver Island.
In December of 1999 I had the honor and privilege of beginning the first Paramedic class on Beaver Island.  As a paramedic and an instructor for over 25 years, I had seen the need for Advanced Life Support on Beaver Island and offered to teach a class on the island if there was an interest.  There were five students in the class, Joe Moore, Beverly and Mike Russell, Carl Kiss and Bob Hamil.  They met every other weekend for one year, completed over 400 hours in the classroom including over 150 hours of practical skills training and 250 hours of clinical time before successfully testing for the Paramedic license in January of 2000.  A second class was held in 2006 with another four students.
These people volunteered their time to become Paramedics and serve the community because there was a need, as is the tradition on Beaver Island.  After several years, a minimal compensation was instituted that was a step in the right direction to recognize and compensate those individuals who responded day or night to an emergency.  Now the Island has come to a crossroads and there is considerable discussion about how to fund EMS, is it necessary, or does the Island even need EMS?.

The answer is a resounding yes!

Advanced Life Support is something that, as a citizen of any community, you hope you never need but you are very glad you have.  Attracting people to Beaver Island and encouraging new families to settle and stay is dependent on the community services such as police, fire and Advanced Life Support.  Paramedics are licensed to provide out-of-hospital emergency care including the administration of emergency medications, interpretation of cardiac rhythms and their treatment, fluid therapy, and advanced airway management, just to name a few.  The skills a paramedic has are a vital addition to the community and a necessary service for residents and visitors alike.

For over 16 years, Beaver Island residents have benefited from the presence of Advanced Life Support.  I personally know of several individuals who have been the recipient of ALS care.  The challenges in funding any initiative are many times an issue that can be divisive to a community. As with many things, sometimes the easiest fix is not the best fix for a situation.  In many ways, it would be unconscionable to go back to a Basic Life Support status or do away with EMS all together when the Island has come so far. I am hopeful that every individual will consider the benefits that ALS service provides and support the ballot initiative on November 8th and fund this vital service.

Sincerely,

Lisa Ferris-McCann

It entered English in the late 1300s.

Little Past Peak with Wind Blowing Leaves

November 4, 2016

This posting is really for those that don't have the ability to go out and view the beautiful fall colors that are quickly disappearing from the trees here on the island. If you're off-Island or not able to travel around the Island. The pictures in the gallery are just a small example of this beauty. The video is pieced together of a ride to Barney's Lake down almost to Protar's home and out to Mrs. Reading's Trail, and back into town and to the point. Hope it gives you an idea of just how beautiful this little past peak day truly is.

November 1, 2016

All Saints' Day is a solemn holy day of the Catholic Church celebrated annually on November 1. The day is dedicated to the saints of the Church, that is, all those who have attained heaven.

It's wet outside, so yesterday's forecast for rain overnight must have been correct. Today at 7:45 a.m. it's 57 degrees warm. The pressure is 29.72 with a visibility of 5.0 miles. It's mostly cloudy at 800 feet and overcast at 1500 feet. The humidity is 97% with a dewpoint of 56 which may explain the visibility of 5 miles. The chance of rain is 32% right now dropping to 4% overnight. The wind is from the SW changing to NW tonight. Wind is at 16 mph.

On this day in 1512, yhe ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome, one of Italian artist Michelangelo’s finest works, is exhibited to the public for the first time.

In this election year with all of the social media, the most important word seems to be verbatim. (ver..BAY..tim) means "in the exact words, word for word." Latin has a phrase for "exactly as written": verbatim ac litteratim, which literally means "word for word and letter for letter." Like the verbatim in that Latin phrase, the English verbatim means "word for word." As you may have noticed, there's a verb in verbatim—and that's no mere coincidence. Both verb and verbatim are derived from the Latin word for "word," which is verbum. Other common English words that share this root include adverb, proverb, and verbose. Even the word word itself is related. Verbatim can also be an adjective meaning "being in or following the exact words" (as in "a verbatim report") and a rarer noun referring to an account, translation, or report that follows the original word for word.

Trunk and Treat

at the Gregg Fellowship Hall

Beginning with the wonderful decorations from PJ Niehaus and others setting up, this night of Trunk and Treat was an excellent opportunity for all of the out-of-town adult to see the excellent costumes and to greet all the kids in the community. It was also an opportunity to say hello to the adult who were bringing the youngsters into town to participate in this terrific event.

In addition to Jerry's Chili, there was coffee, hot dogs, and cider to help take the edge off before a busy night of Trick or Treat-ing. This was just a fun early evening for everyone kids and adults as well.

Happy Halloween

You might see some kids in costume walking into the school this morning as they are allowed to dress in costumes. Trick of Treat-ing will take place tonight. Don't forget about the Trunk or Treat taking place at the Gregg Fellowship Center at the Christian Church from 5-7 pm tonight. There will be many out-of-town people there giving out candy.

"Straddling the line between fall and winter, plenty and paucity, life and death, Halloween is a time of celebration and superstition. It is thought to have originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off roaming ghosts. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints and martyrs; the holiday, All Saints’ Day, incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows’ Eve and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a secular, community-based event characterized by child-friendly activities such as trick-or-treating. In a number of countries around the world, as the days grow shorter and the nights get colder, people continue to usher in the winter season with gatherings, costumes and sweet treats."

Weather by Joe

October 31, 2016

As you may know, Phyllis is on the mainland today, so she will not be doing the weather today. This will have to suffice in addition to her extended forecast down below completed on the 30th.

The temperature at 7:15 a.m. is 44 degrees. It is overcast with winds variable with light gusts to 3 mph increasing to 18-20 mph as the day continues. The pressure is 30.2 with visibility of ten miles. The dewpoint is 40 degrees, and the humidity is 86%. The chance of rain is 10% today until at 3 a.m. tomorrow morning when it increases to 50-70% until 9 a.m. tomorrow morning, so it's likely that it may rain overnight.

The high temperature for today is forecast to be in the low fifties with a drop in temperature overnight into the low forties. The forecast for tomorrow is partly sunny with a chance of rain less than 9%.
