Minutes of July 9, 2007, Organizational & Regular School Board Meeting

 

 

Call to Order President Barb Schwartzfisher called to order a meeting of the Beaver Island Community School Board of Education on Monday, July 9, 2007, at 7:47 p.m.

Oath of Office Newly-elected board members Drost & Weede were sworn in with an Oath

of Office prior to the meeting.

 

Approval of Chair McNamara was appointed chair pro-tem and opened the floor for

Pro-Tem, Nomination discussion and nomination of officers.

Officers Moved by Tritsch, supported by Marsh, to nominate Barb Schwartzfisher

as President; to nominate Dawn Marsh as Vice-President; Nancy Tritsch

as Secretary and Sharon Nix-Cole as Treasurer. Motion carried

unanimous decision.

 

Moved by Nix-Cole, supported by Cole, to nominate Dawn Marsh as Vice-

President. Motion carried unanimous decision.

 

Moved by Nix-Cole, supported by Marsh, to nominate Nancy Tritsch as Secretary. Motion carried unanimous decision.

 

Moved by Marsh, supported by Schwartzfisher, to nominate Brian Cole as Treasurer. Motion carried unanimous decision.

 

Approval of Minutes Moved by Nix-Cole, supported by Cole, to approve the minutes of the June 11, 2007, Regular School Board Meeting and June 21, 2007, Special School Board Meeting as presented. Motion carried unanimous decision.

Approval of Moved by Tritsch, supported by Marsh, to name Charlevoix State Bank

Depositories and as Depository. Motion carried unanimous decision.

Fund MMA, Debt Fund Checking, Sinking Fund Checking, Food Service

Island Youth Consortium checking. Motion carried unanimous decision.

Setting of Meeting Moved by Tritsch, supported by Marsh, to set the second Monday of each

Dates, Time, Location month (except the 3 rd Monday in April) at 7:30 p.m. at Beaver Island Community School . Motion carried unanimous decision.

August 7 th Bond Bret Kroenlin was present for the public walk through prior to the meeting

Election and facilitated the pubic informational session following the walk through.

'07-'08 Staffing Needs Moved by Tritsch, supported by Cole, to accept the hiring of Daniel Martels at BA, Step 4, on the 07-08 Teacher Salary Schedule. Motion carried unanimous decision.

It is expected other hiring decisions to be approved at the August 13, 2007, board meeting meeting.

Hiring of Coaches A recommendation for this year's soccer coach will be made at the August Board Meeting.

Moved by Cole, supported by Tritsch, to approve the hiring of Connie Boyle as this year's volleyball coach. Motion carried unanimous decision.

'07-08 Calendar Moved by Cole-Nix, supported by Tritsch, to approved the '07-'08 school year calendar as presented. Motion carried unanimous.

Administrative Update Proposed changes for 2007-2008 Student Handbooks are tabled until the August meeting; there are no drug free schools issues to report since last month's meeting update. Outgoing board members and retiring teachers

(Fiegen, L. McDonough, J. Stambaugh, and Moore) will be recognized at a formal dinner to be held at Beaver Island Lodge in September or October.

Other McNamara will meet with board members to discuss complaints received from parents about bullying.

Minutes of August 13, 2007, Regular School Board Meeting

Call to Order President Barb Schwartzfisher called to order a meeting of the Beaver Island Community School Board of Education on Monday, August 13,

2007, at 7:30 p.m.

Approval of Minutes Moved by Marsh, supported by Tritsch, to approve the minutes of the July 9, 2007, Organizational & Regular School Board Meeting as presented. Motion carried unanimous decision.

Treasurer's Report NcNamara reported that Hill Schroderus is conducting our audit and is being assisted by Char-Em. County Treasurer Marilyn Cousineau took county tax error to county board. Charlevoix County is willing to pay one-half, or approximately $11,000.00 to resolve the tax error; business manager thinks it is probably best to take what is offered and keep a close eye on future county tax calculations. The board would like Kitty to look into it further to see if the total amount of the error can be recouped.

Tax Anticipation Moved by Tritsch, supported by Nix, to adopt the attached resolution authorizing

Note Resolution issuance of notes in anticipation of taxes. Motion carried unanimous decision.

Teacher Hirings Moved by Marsh, supported by Tritsch, to accept the Interviewing Committee's recommendation to hire Math Teacher Matthew Ritchie. Motion carried unanimous decision.

Moved by Marsh, supported by Tritsch, to authorize the Interviewing Committee, if needed, to offer employment for a new English Teacher. Motion carried unanimous decision.

McNamara reported that there is a possibility that we will need to hire a para-professional as a special ed aide.

Student Handbooks Board members have until August 20 to respond to the proposed student handbook changes after which time the handbooks will be printed for use for the 2007-08 school year. As such, the handbooks become school policy.

Bond Election The district will formally thank the Beaver Island Citizens for Quality Education and the public for their support in the passage bond election.

Bond Resolution Moved by Marsh, supported by Nix-Cole, to adopt the attached resolution authorizing the sale of bonds for building expansion and remodeling. Motion carried unanimous decision.
