Meet Evie Folkening
The Beaver Island Community School has a new substitute teacher who will be filling in for Debbie Robert, who is on maternity leave from September 20th until the holiday break. She will be teaching the 1st and 2nd graders. For the past few days she's been learning the curriculum, routines and teaching styles that Debbie uses as well as developing a relationship with the children to ensure that the change from one teacher to the another goes as smooth as possible.
Evie Folkening is from Holland, Michigan and received her degree in elementary education from Michigan State University. She has been coming to the island for several years with her family. You may have seen her sunny smile around town and wondered who this young lady was.. now you know, so stop and say "hi" and welcome her to our community.
Evie enjoys reading, painting, running and just being out-of-doors so she's chosen the perfect place.
Welcome to Beaver Island, Evie.
Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra Coming
The Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra, Ars Musica, presents Courtly Dances and Variations -- works by Handel, Graun and Mozart. The event takes place at 2 o'clock on Wednesday, September 25, at Holy Cross Hall. Featured muscians include Bonnietta Benn on flute; Prudy Kurtz, violin; Karey Johnson, viola; Mary Beth Kur cello; Robert Pattengale, harpsichord. The performance is for the entire Beaver Island community and is made possible by the Jordan River Arts Council.
Happy Birthday, Jerry!
One of the island's most beloved sons will be celebrating his birthday on Sunday, September 22nd. Can't think of a nicer fellow to send best wishes to. Jerry is the "preserver of island photographs and memoribilia" in his Freesoil Road museum.
A very, very Happy Birthday to you, Sam Hanks... and many, many more!
From your family and all your many friends
