Our condolences to Irene's family and friends.
When we hear of the death of someone we knew our minds flash back and mine did last night when I heard of Irene's passing. I remember coming home from school in the late afternoon, walking across the frozen harbor and Irene, who had that Palmer musical talent, singing "Silver Threads and Golden Needles" as the ice and snow crunched beneath our feet. I've never been able to hear that song, nor think of Irene, without remembering that late winter afternoon. God bless you, Irene.
We Will Never Forget
On Wednesday, September 11th, there will be an ecumenical memorial service held on the island at 9:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church to remember all those who lost their lives during the attack on the United States, please plan on attending.
UPDATE: Holy Cross Catholic Church was standing room only on September 11th, as the congregations from the Christian Church, the Episcopal Church, Holy Cross and many visitors joined together to remember the tragic events of one year ago. Under the direction of Kathy Speck, the community choir raised their voices in patriotic songs to the accompaniment of Lorain Dawson. Father Pat Cawley, Father Joe Howell and Reverend Howard Davis represented the three island churches. As an act of remembrance, seven candles were lit by members of the various churches with a 15 second pause between each and the tolling of the church bell. For the passengers on American Airlines Flight 11 and United Flight 175 which were flown into the World Trade Center. For all the workers who perished in the World Trade Center and neighboring buildings. For the firefighters, police, and rescue workers who died trying to save others. For the passengers on American Airlines Flight 77 which was flown into the Pentagon. For the military personnel and civilians who were working at the Pentagon. For the heroic passengers on United Flight 93 which crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. For those who have died in the war in Afghanistan. At noon, Beaver Island EMS personnel set off the sirens in the ambulances for one minute.
Thanks go to all those involved for their strength and compassion in dealing with the memories of September 11, 2001. We WILL always remember.
